About two weeks ago, we sent in the Wisdom Panel Insights DNA test for Bud. This morning, we received his results. The two primary breeds in his background are Golden Retriever and Chow Chow. These we pretty much expected. The next two breeds that they found are Portuguese Water Dog and Weimaraner - both of which were a surprise, and neither of which we can see in him. The Portuguese Water Dog is one of his grandparents, who mated with another grandparent, the Golden. Another grandparent is a Weimaraner - Chow mix. And then, his last grandparent is a smattering of sneaky little neighbor dogs, which we expected: Basenji (11.34%), Cocker Spaniel (6.94%), Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen (5.4%), and Dachshund (4.5%). Finally, there is the completely unexpected wildcard - Irish Wolfhound (1.53%).

I've always wondered if those tests were really accurate, or just a way to separate people from their money.

I've got a golden whose pedigree I can trace back 100 years. I was idly considering sending her DNA in for analysis, just to see if anything other than Golden Retriever would come back. But I was never curious enough to actually do it.

Having thought about it for a little while, I'm pleased. The PWD and the Weimaraner results were both tagged with a *, which means that these breeds were detected in his DNA, but with a lower confidence rating. And the percentages for the smattering of little dogs were below that * rating, which tells me that he has little dog(s) somewhere in his background. We expected to see that, given that he seems to exhibit some little dog sorts of behaviors (e.g. spinning in a circle, standing on his back legs, yarpy barking when he is excited).

They are not always correct and the reason is there are some breeds they will not test for such as pitbull due to liability. My friend sent in one on his pit mixe they knew the mom and she was a purebred The dad was a shepard cross that was well known. He came back shepard/ lab on dads side and golden retriever on the mom. We sent a picture of him and the mom and her papers and asked what the heck. That is when they stated there are some breeds they don't check for so they go with the next closest. Last I heard GR were not anywhere close to a pitbull. This sweet boy was a brindle and could have passed for a purebred pit lol

The one I used was not accurate at all. They requested you send in a picture of your dog along with the sample. I assume they went by the picture and guessed.

My friend sent in a picture of her friends Lab/German Shepherd mix and DNA from her papered imported Shepherd and it came back as German Shepherd/Golden Retriever/Husky. Explain that....

I sent in Rubys DNA to humour myself along with a picture of her. Her results were Bichon/Collie. Her "breeder" was breeding designer shih poos and we saw both parents. No way shes a bichon/Collie. I "could" see *some* Bichon..but not sure where the collie is coming from.

This was DNA my dog we used. Not sure about the Wisdom panel and what they ask for when you submit DNA. But if they ask for a picture...I wouldnt be shocked if they go by the pic and have a staff guessing game or something

I had Woody done through the Wisdom Pannel and I must admit I was impressed with the results. They didn't ask for a picture or any kind of discription of the dog.

I think that is SO FUNNY when they ask you to send a pic!!

I think someone on the forum had Wisdom Panel send them swaps for 2nd DNA sample, as not enough on lst one - that sound as about a legit as you're going to get!

Bridger's confirmed what I always felt -- he's a poorbred golden -- 100% on one parent; sketchy breeding on other.

I did two different tests on our Barkley. He looked like a golden, just curly fur. The first test was a cheek swab that asked for a photo. I didn't send the photo and they ended up sending me another swab kit. Our veterinarian did it for us. It came back as only Golden Retriever. It only tested for 65 breeds so I was skeptical. When Wisdom Panel first came out they used a blood draw from a veterinarian (is that still the case?) and tested for 135 breeds (more or less). They did not ask for a photo or anything and it also came back Golden Retriever. We just left it at that because he had 100% of the golden personality and spirit. Even if he had come back a total mish mash of breeds we still loved him totally and that's what really counts!

The Wisdom Panel is a cheek swab (actually, they give you two swabs, just to be sure that you get a good sample). They do not ask for a photo, although you can upload a photo, once the results are completed, that is then added to the certificate.

We've had Wisdom Panel Insights do two tests. Both were very accurate. All we sent was the swab. Once we got the results back for Katie (Our 75% Bichon/25% Pappilion self rescue) and Buddy, a rescue *Laura* adopted last December, the results of the DNA test were readily apparent looking at them. Both were gifts my SIL sent for Christmas.

I could recommend Wisdom Panel Insights DNA test to anyone.

I did a Wisdom panel test on Cheyenne, my little black mix breed dog. The first time they sent me another kit and said there was not enough sample on the swabs. The second time they sent me the results. They said my 16 ", 30lb, solid black dog was a St. Bernarnd/German Shepherd/Labrador mix.

This is my St. Bernard/Shepherd mix - she is full grown and will not get any bigger. I am convinced they mixed the samples up with someone elses, but they would not let me send in another set of swabs for another test. They gave me a refund because there is no way that's right.
