Emma, who is 7 months old, has been on cephalexin and ketoconazole for an ear infection. After 1 week of this treatment, she developed incontinence. There are little droplets of urine, like a trail, following her. This happens on and off throughout the day. She appears unaware this is happening, and does not seem to be in pain.
At the vet visit, a urinalysis was normal, an ultrasound showed no stones and a rectal exam, all normal. Other than this, she appears healthy and happy. The vet is stumped and so am I.
Thinking back, this happened before. When she was 13 weeks old, she was on antibiotics for a GI infection, and developed the same symptoms. The issue resolved itself after a couple of weeks. At that time, we thought she had regressed on her potty training or was too excited.
This is not just puppy excitement or submissive urination. Throughout the day, she has periods when her bottom is wet, and trailing urine.
The two vets. discussed it, and decided to hold off on the UC Davis visit. We are observing Emma and keeping track of any incidents. I am reporting to them weekly. She also had another urinalysis to see if her urine is more concentrated now.
Unfortunately, Emma's symptoms have returned. A third vet. I consulted, in the same practice as the other two, is of the opinion this is a kidney issue. He drew blood and a sterile urine sample.
Emma's prior kidney function test was on the high side of normal, and her urine has been dilute in most urine tests, but one, were it showed just on the good side of normal.
At any rate, based on the test results, he will order an ultrasound of the kidneys looking for congenital anomalies.
-hugs- I am so so sorry for the diagnosis. I don't really have much advice- maybe seek out an internist to look at options/supplementation, etc?
