Nose Colour

Suni's question got me wondering ...

At what age did your dog's nose turn brown?
My boy is two. Can it happen at any age?

Does your brown nosed dog also have treat spots on their tongue?

Is a brown nose valued/allowable in the show ring?

Who knew that noses were so fascinating?

I don't know the answer to the question about nose color in the show ring, but my dog's nose turned brown towards winter. He is a 6 year old rescue dog and we've only had him about 9 months so we're still learning about him. My vet called it "snow nose", and right now it seems to be darkening again, but not a deep black. I have heard it's not uncommon for nose color to change with the season.

If it's going to turn pink, it usually happens between 2-5.

With our previous three boys, it happened when they were about 3 years old. You get used to it. My Jacks still has a black nose, but I'm still holding my breath....

Our Danny was the only one with black spots on his tongue - and yes, he had a pink nose as soon as he was between 3 and 4.

I have no idea what is allowed in Aus, but over here - it's not preferred. I don't think it's outright not allowed though.

Mia's nose turned brownish at 2 and a bit years old. She does not have a black spot on her tongue.

Hank's nose turned his first winter, he was born in July. He does not have a "treat spot".
His brother/littermate's nose turned later, he does have a "treat spot".

Buddy and Roxy have brownish-pink noses while Cozy and Lucy have black ones. I think brown-pink nosed dogs show their hearts on their faces.

Is there anything you can do to keep the black nose? Is it a medical condition, lack of vitamins? I have seen so many GRs on this forum with brown noses and also noticed that our first GR back in 1980 turned a brown nose around the age of three.

Brady is 5 and has kept his black nose, he also has a treat spot on his tongue, black pads and black eye liner.

MacKenzies was always pinkish/brown, no eye liner, no treat spots, and pink/brown paw pads.

Per breed standard....

Nose -- black or brownish black, though fading to a lighter shade in cold weather not serious. Pink nose or one seriously lacking in pigmentation to be faulted.

I went to a local dog show and when I was walked through a vendors tent where they were selling show supplies.

Among all of the stuff, I saw a bottle of black "nose paint". Seriously, that was what was on the label - nose paint.

I wish I bought a bottle just for the novelty of having it.
