New Puppy Training

************* Posted this is the wrong spot, sorry for the duplicate!! I'm new ********************************************

We don't even get to bring our new little guy home until March 30th but I'm looking at all the trainers in the Denver area. That brings me to a question for everyone. Did anyone else do any kind of training or did you just do the training yourself? I'm not looking to do training for socialization, we can get that figured out. We would have the trainer come to our house so my children and husband and I can be on the same page.

We haven't had a dog in 8 years. Our last two dogs were rescue dogs, shepherd mixes, and one was very abused. We had them before children. They were not good around other people, and a lot of that was us not training them. They were great, lived long happy lives and I miss them like crazy. This new puppy will be our first golden retriever.

I'm willing to spend money to train - I'm also amazed at what people are charging - it's all over the place. Some of the people I talk to don't feel like a good fit with my family and others do - but are so expensive. So my question is, has anyone ever just trained on your own? Share everything, I appreciate it! Thanks!

Best of luck with your puppy!

My opinion:

I like to go to obedience class. I do train for competition but that is not the reason I am there. I am there for socialization, basic obedience, behavior modification, and advice from my trainer. I am on Long Island, NY which for all intents and purposes is like NYC and I probably pay top dollar. I pay $175 for a six week period. I not only get a one hour a week class but I also get phone time, texting, videos, and email. My trainer is at the top of his game.

When I trained on my own in the past I found that my training was deficient. I didn't have enough distractions. Also, I was not exposed to new techniques in training. Obedience class is the way to go IMO. And I can always book a private if I want.
