I always use a small plastic crate when they are little. Have you tried feeding him in the crate? You can place treats inside it and leave the door open as well.
I feed my pups in the crate with the door closed but not latched. I also cover my crate with a thick blanket. It helps block out sounds and the puppy can't see you, also makes the crate more "den" like.
We've crate trained both of our dogs with the same plastic carrier. We got one for a large dog and I just built a wooden barrier for the back of it to make the inside smaller, so they didn't have room to poop/pee in it... I think one dog pooped in it once, but it was because we'd left him in there too long.
Neither of ours liked it either, but we treated when we put them in. We've never used it for punishment, but we do put them away if they get too wound up... Neither of them mind their kennels anymore; it took them about a year before they got to the point where they'd go in on their own when they wanted to relax.
