In 28 days we'll bring home our puppy. I'm reading about potty training now and I think I'm more confused now than before starting this book.

The author suggests a crate as well as a puppy play area. Ok. He says an hour in the crate, outside to use the bathroom and then play. So what does that look like? How much later after play do you go back to the crate for a bit? I've never used a crate but then again I've only had a dog, not a puppy.

But he also says that in the puppy play area (especially used when you're not home) to use an indoor potty area within the play area. Basically putting an open door crate in the play area with the potty area away from it.

Do you guys suggest an indoor potty area? My husband and I will be home for the first 2 weeks after brining home the puppy. After that my mom will be there each day so we're going to train her too. Lol!

Personally, I don't like allowing puppies to toilet indoors, ever. From day one I teach them that all peeing/pooping is done outdoors. I took them out every 20 min. or so during the day, also after eating, napping, playing or eating. We used baby gates to keep puppy out if carpeted areas and crated at night.

I have to agree with Nancy. We took Buddy outside every twenty minutes or so, we were fortunate that he clued in to going outside. I believe that if you have an indoor potty area, it will confuse your pup.

I completely agree I had an indoor toilet area for mine and it took me alt longer to train her she is only just getting completely trained now and she is 7 months.
