Training today consisted of articles which both boys did twice for each article and both not only got them correctly but also did nice turns in place and most f+f were straight . Turns to the left ( as in the #3 glove ) well done even Hombre . With Hombre we practiced take hold out with the glove and he is showing improvement. A couple signals were also practiced a short but productive session today.

Moved to a new class due to an instructor being fired....not my instructor. Class size went from 3 to 7 and it's all new people. I'm pretty sure I'm in a more advanced class now since everything involved extreme distance, like sending to a backside while I stand behind the tunnel Penny went through. I didn't send her since we have zero distance skills right now, I ran to everything. A part of another course there was an option to send Penny two jumps ahead of me AND send her to a tunnel next to the second jump. Yeah, not happening right now. I have some serious motivation to work on distance in the backyard now.

Someone walked into the ring with their Weimaraner (on leash) before I got Penny back on hers, and she went up to it pretty calmly. She sniffed it and was very good about the surprise dog.

I also noticed tonight when I do a lead-out and release Penny, she moves slightly like she's thinking about jumping, then stops and I have to release her again. Then that's when she barks and goes over or grabs the leash. Her lead outs and start line stays are phenomenal, so I don't know why she's flinching. But I do think she's going through some kind of thought/emotion in that little flinch and that's what sets all the barking off.

Also did the first lesson for FDSA, arousal testing, in the backyard.

This morning was more indoors training/play

The basic setups were:

Heeling to 1-2-3 step halts following by front 1-2-3 step fronts to heeling to signals with a shimmy shake on the the stand signal (Towhee didn't wait for the signal LOL but 2nd time she did), sit signal, explosive release as they were coming in for recall and front, followed by a bit of personal play. Aedan had verbals as well and very close disrance.

Fun is

Two agility training sessions in two days. My daughter is sick and couldn't go to her lesson yesterday evening, so I took Duster along instead. It's a half-hour Master-level semi-private lesson with one other team. I made the exercises a bit easier for him by taking out the back-side jump entries. He did very well - I was impressed. He was excited to work and showed some good speed. He was also able to do the master's-level distance exercises.

This morning was our last private lesson with the trainer who's coached us for the past year. We did short sequences to build speed and drive. During one of the exercises Duster fell off the "up" ramp of the dogwalk - his first negative experience with this obstacle. Given his soft personality and previous fear issues, I was a bit concerned, but he went straight back on with no hesitation, and performed it well for the rest of the session. This was a big step forward for us, in terms of attitude and recovery ability. In the past he's been "freaky" after making mistakes; for example, the first time he knocked a bar, he refused to jump at all for two days. The incident showed me that he's building his confidence.

He continues to think a lot about what he does, and to hesitate if I'm late with my commands. He's the type of dog who's going to push me to become a better handler.

So, today did not go as originally planned but perhaps ended up better

I had planned to do drop in rally & obedience classes, but ended up having some delays on errands, talking to the bank for around an hour (totally unplanned) about finance options and getting my tax information, and then upon arriving home found 6 of my dozen eggs had broken so had to cook them up (Faelan & Aedan were in the car or possibly while being bagged?)

Anyway, while on errands with Faelan & Aedan, Staples opened later than I expected so before going in I entertained the other people waiting LOL

Faelan: Heeling, signals, MSFE, recalls and fron & finish games.
Aedan: Heeling with a lot of turns, halts, fronts, finishes, pop up stands and recall games

Then more errands and I stopped at a park (same one as last weekend) where we used the upper tennis/basketball court:
Faelan: Heeling including crazy patterns using the circles & corners, signals, MSFE, Go Outs, ROF
Aedan: Heeling with a lot of turns, halts, front games, ROF and pop up stands

Then home where I had to break off to cook those eggs and eat.

Then Towhee and Brady headed to the same park, but this time I remembered to grab some scent articles -- thinking afterwards that I should have grabbed Towhee's wooden articles rather than metal but oh well, she did fine LOL

Towhee: Heeling which she aced, but again the proximity of the dogs & people playing at the dog park was a huge draw and we worked quite a bit on signals. Then more heeling & recalls, followed by scent articles which she aced, and the ROF which she surprised me!! People were walking directly by the open gate and she still snatched her dumbbell and returned directly to me -- YAY Towhee. We had a party

Brady: Heeling again using the lines and circles in unexpected patterns. Then signals - he too had a few issues with the drop signal - looking directly at me but not seeing LOL or perhaps he was watching the activity behind me so we had a few repeats and he did better. Then scent articles which other than anticipating (no action taken on my part since it showed inititive and will be worked separately), he totally aced! We finished up with ROF which he seemed to truly LOVE.

Now it is time to warm up again and be glad I am done driving for the day -- pickup truck drivers were truly on a roll with horrid driving, perhaps already drunk? Whatever, they were beyond unbelievable and full attention was required to prevent accidents. I confess I was thinking bad thoughts about their probably personal habits!
