Hey, he's not old!

mature maybe, but how can you think my Casey is old?

I brought Casey to the vets yesterday for his Heartworm, TBD etc testing and he's gained more weight!! He's up to 79 pounds and so we of course discussed this - his thyroid supplementation is good (it really is) but since he was neutered, the weight in increasing. He might have a bit of ortho arthritis starting in his knees, not good. His heart is fine, his BP and pulses are all good and strong and his spleen is no longer enlarged ... All good stuff. We decided to have a TBD DNA test done (rather than the SNAP) since it will pinpoint if he has any current infections going on.

But back to the weight, when I asked about getting out the Mountain Bike since Casey just is not as active on our hikes anymore, the vet said 'probably not a good idea' and why? Because Casey's over 9 and an old dog ... Casey old .. how, when, why? Okay he's a bit silvered but that glorious tail still whomps the walls, while slower he still runs and while I don't jump him anymore, he still eyes the jumps .. <sigh> His eyes still dance and while he does made those old dog moans sometimes, his breathing is still clear and he greets each day with a lick and a promise.

It was suggested I might want a senior plus exam that includes XRays and ultra sound and when I asked why, they said the XRays and ultrasound are really cancer screenings - I declined since radiation is something I try to limit in myself and my dogs (he did have the spleen ultrasounded last year), and frankly if the found a cancer that could not be removed it would only make me feel guilty for all of his remaining days...and would have me treating him differently ..

He's not old and won't be old until he's 14 .. that's my story and I'm sticking to it

I wish my Tiny and my Toby were old like Casey...they're 12+ and 13+. Heck, Casey is still a young punk.
It's all relative.

Grins - now see they're not old either and won't be until they're 14+ ... and why exactly do they call cancer screening 'senior wellness?' Kind of like 'women's wellness'

Please don't tell Buddy that he will be "old" this summer, he hasn't figured it out yet.

My teenage "old" dog. All recent. Still can go lure coursing. Oops. I did not tell him he is an old fart.
