Pepper in a Pickle

Hi, Everyone!

Our awesome puppy, Pepper has been living with us for thirteen (very long) days and is fifteen weeks old today! I finally have enough energy to make the introduction post I've been wanting to make here for a long time now.

Pepper is super sweet and cuddly, but has some very, very strong feelings and isn't afraid to express them! Mostly he wants to be with us all the time and hates even being in his expen in the same room. All he wants is to be out with us. He loves stuffies, rope bones and bully sticks, but has zero interest so far in Kongs, Nylabones, etc - anything he could chew without our constant supervision. Like all goldens, he wants to put everything in his mouth, but has yet to start chewing on people.

We've been doing lots of socializing and he's really been enjoying it. He's had two rounds of puppy kindergarten, been to PetSmart (riding in a cart with a towel), the mall (twice now - it's outdoors), was carried to overlook a dog beach and last night, went to a local cove to see sea lions and hear the ocean. I think he's been petted by over 150 people in just this last week alone. Sometimes we can only walk a foot or two before more people come over - but that's why we've been taking him out!

If any of you have read this far, I have a question. He's pretty close to outgrowing the crates we have in our cars (30") and within a few weeks, won't fit into them anymore. What do you guys do when your puppy is still really small but is too big for a crate in a car? In addition to securing him safely, I'm worried about him chewing on the seats, the belt, anything he can...

Tonight will be attempt number two at grooming. We're keeping it to ten minutes a day. He's not a fan. I'm sure he'll love the ear swiping and trimming of a few of his back nails and getting him used to the Dremel though! Hope springs eternal when you have a puppy!

I realized pretty quickly that Pepper is the kind of puppy who needs *massive* stimulation and attention - more than I could give him alone - so this week, he started day care. He loves it! Being an adorable gr puppy, he's the most popular dog there right now and he's already made friends and learned that stairs aren't that scary after all. We're also looking at a few highly rated home daycares where he can hang out in a giant shady yard full of ocean breezes all day with a pack of dog friends. We should all be so lucky!

Here are a couple of pictures of Pepper examining the fish at PetSmart, hanging out by his first fountain at the mall and snoozing happily on our couch. I hope you enjoy them!

Only three weeks until his first trip to the beach! I can't wait!

Pepper is a very cute pup! To answer your question about restraint in the car we use a dog hammock and then she wears a harness that clicks into the seat belt. We have a Civic so a crate isn't an option for us. The hammock protects the seat and the harness keeps her as safe as possible in the event we ever got in an accident.

Thank you so much for the helpful answer! Is the harness a standard harness or something special for car-riding?

We have the hammock bookmarked on amazon. I think in combo with a harness, that'll work awesomely.

I'm so glad we're something like two weeks away from this being an issue. Have you ever noticed that with a puppy, two weeks like two years? It's so far in the future! Who cares?!

You're most welcome. I believe the Sleepypod harness is the most highly rated one from crash tests they've done. It's not inexpensive and Pepper would outgrow it fairly quickly so that is something to factor in. We have a Sleepypod Sport and we also have one from Kurgo.

Time does seem to stand still when they are pups but it flies by the older they get!

Yikes! Today Pepper lost his first tooth! I thought I had another month before this becomes an issue. Time to order (even more) toys!
