So I have a 4 month old male golden....He is very active as expected he is a puppy. He constantly wants to play with my 13 year old bichon...The bichon has growled and barked at him but he doesn't stop. I usually leave the leash on him and intervene. I know he is just being a puppy but usually they get the point and he just doesn't seem to...Any suggestions...( They do have times that he is fine with him. for example they are both sleeping on the dog bed together now)

Unfortunately your bichon is probably too small/old to teach your puppy the kind of lesson it would take to for your puppy to 'get the point'. Please keep following your instincts and keep your puppy leashed or very closely supervised so that you can protect the senior dog. The puppy is going to grow so fast that he could unintentionally hurt the smaller guy just trying to play and you'd feel awful if that happened. I would not leave them unsupervised for a second anytime soon.

I have an eleven week old golden puppy, Cali, who has a similar issue with my 12 year old golden, Sadie. I keep Cali on leash and let them play (Sadie is very patient), but Cali doesn't know when to quit. Sadie will check her, but she is a lot bigger, obviously. So I watch them. I don't leave them alone together, and when Cali gets too crazy, I separate them in different rooms so Cali can have a time out. I also keep working on "leave it" when Cali grabs Sadie's foot as Sadie walks by. Again, Sadie is so patient, she tries to go a different way! Being vigilant, I think, is important to help both of them. Somehow, I don't think puppies are really capable of getting it when it comes to forging ahead in play! Good luck, to both of us : )
