I think Jasper may have Parvo

And I am so scared!

He had his DHPP booster on Wednesday. On Thursday he wouldn't eat much of his breakfast - I found that strange but thought maybe it was due to the vaccination. Then all day Thursday he was his normal puppy like self until 4pm. He developed very sudden onset watery diarrhea. No blood, no excessive smell but very watery. We skipped his evening meal and I emailed my vet to ask if this could be a reaction to the DHPP - she said it might. Then at 10pm-ish he vomited all his lunch. He vomited twice more in the night and had to go poop every half hour until about 3am, then it became every hour. Still no blood, and now he is basically pooping clear. He is very lethargic - doesn't want to move and just wants to sleep. Throughout the night his stomach hardens every half minute to a minute and he isn't really drinking many fluids. I am hoping beyond hope that it is just a regular bacterial infection or something, but I am not confident of this given his symptoms appear to be textbook parvo. I have a vet appointment at 10.30. Please send positive vibes for Jasper.

I am so sorry that this is happening. Am sending positive thoughts and prayers that it is something that can be easily treated. Please let us know what your vet says.

Thanks for all your kind thoughts! What an emotional morning it has been for my household.

So far so good - the vet game him a SNAP test for Parvo and it came back negative. They looked at a fecal sample under the microscope and saw possible Giardiasis infection, but they want to sent off a sample elsewhere for a more accurate test. In the mean time they are going to start him on IV hydration. If he doesn't get better on this, the next step will be x-ray to rule out obstruction (she said she can't feel anything on examination), but the general consensus from both his vets (he has two independent vets, one regular and one holistic) is that he appears to allergic to the DHPP. Hopefully, he will feel better later after they have hydrated him and he gets some food into his tiny tummy. If so, I can go pick him up. If not we need to figure out the next step.

I hope your Jasper is doing better! Will he need to have another DHPP booster even though he had a bad reaction to this one?

I'm so sorry for your worry, and poor Jasper If he came from a reputable breeder, be sure to contact the breeder asap with the information you have so that she knows how to help other puppy owners from the litter. Ask the vet if there's a possibility that other puppies in the litter could be allergic to the vaccine? Fingers crossed for you on this.

My plan going forward is to get titres for the vaccines then give him any needed vaccines as individual vaccines. It costs a lot more but my vet does them separately, so I will go that route. I thought my boy was going to die in the night and I will make sure he never has to go through that again whilst still staying current with his vaccines.
