Weight

At the dog park today, a man kept mentioning over & over that Dory was so thin. I thought she was a healthy weight. We're so diligent with what she eats as we do not want her to struggle with her weight. Bayleigh carried extra weight from the time she was spayed- and it got worse as she hit her senior years- so we're working super hard to not allow Dory to do the same.

Adding a few pics- not sure how accurate they'd be to see if I do need to increase her intake- here I was thinking of decreasing! :/ how do you know what's a good, healthy weight?

I'm no expert but I think she looks just fine. And your vet will let you know if she under weight. That guy sounds like a know it all. And 'over and over'? Did he say he was a vet? I'm guessing he's not. lol

She's a beautiful girl!

She looks right to me. I think a lot of people are so used to seeing overweight dogs that when they see a dog who weighs what it is supposed to weigh they think it's too skinny. I remember you said your vet thought Dory's weight was good. So, I'd thank the guy at the dog park for his concern and let it go at that.

it's probably too much for her then - try 2 cups in the morning and 1.5 cups in the evening and see if that makes a difference. It's probably a self-regulating thing she's doing.

I think she looks absolutely fine though. I love her tail! Kaizer gets the lab comment fairly often, but I don't see it at all.

I do not see the lab in her either! LOL. Especially now that her little bum is getting fluffy and her chest is fluffing out- LOL. I mean, labs are cute- but- she looks like a young golden to me! ;)

She looks great slow growth with a lean body is great for puppies and good for those growing bones. I always say something like oh my vet thinks she is pretty spot on weight wise ( which my vet always said when my guys were puppies) and maybe add some comment she is in the awkward gangly stage. Most people leave you alone if you have the vet on your side :) Some people have to say something but if you look at their dogs they are usually overweight.

Yes, it is. But if she isn't sleeping- she's moving. ;) I'm going to reduce the evening meal as she isn't finishing, but she gobbles up breakfast.

She gets carrots & apples throughout the day for snacks, too. :)

We never could get Chloe away from that afternoon meal. She asks for it everyday we eat lunch. My mom keeps saying your gonna get fat but she is still thin and lean. I think she has been on about 2.5 to 3 cups since about six months. She likes veggies and fruits too. I think she stays thin because we don't give her actual dog treats. Maybe one a month or every two months. I think that has also helped her not gain weight after her spay.

I think Mochi would eat my arm off if I cut his food intake LOL he is currently 7.5 months and eats 3 cups, not one kibble less LOL... but I think he's a healthy shape and the vet says he's perfect so I'll leave it at that...I think a lot of people are used to Goldens slightly/very overweight... well it's better to have them put on weight than cut it later :p

Molly is just a week younger than Dory and I think their bodies look real similar. Here's a HUGE picture...sorry not sure how to make it smaller! Molly seems to be all legs and teeth and this age!

Super jealous of your perfectly maintained GREEN grass. Ours is flood ridden, dead, and gross. And another TS supposed to hit Thursday... Florida sucks.

Oh, yes, very similar. She was 43 pounds a few weeks ago. Our vet said she is perfect- but I was concerned to hear she looked so thin to some(it isn't the first time I have heard it). But, truly, our goal is to keep her thin and healthy. I am positive that as Bay aged the extra weight was miserable on her joints. And the diet made her want to commit puppy suicide.. so I'd rather avoid this time at all cost of possible. Live and learn! ;)

She gobbled up her dinner tonight, too. So I am not sure if I should cut her meals some.. I was planning to at 6-months, but right now I thought she needed the extra calories given how very active she is! She is on TOTW salmon puppy.. Not even sure how many calories per cup.

CPC- We do not do regular treats at all. It's not just about the weight, though, they're hard to find without stuff that makes her itch. She is so stinkin' complicated!

Our problem is when we give her something like a bully stick she eats the entire thing in like 5 minutes then pukes it up. Normally some of these flavored bones should last days. Nope she eats the entire thing and won't walk away until it's gone. Veggies are much better for them anyway.

Chloe would be so fat if she was in a family that just fed her all the time. This past weekend she stayed at my sisters while my parents went out of town. Chloe was with me all day on Sat so I fed her lunch. My mom put plenty of dog food in the container for my sister. She texts her Sunday and goes what time you going to be home. Chloe doesn't have enough food for dinner. She never measures and always over feeds her.

Oh, wow. But, I promise Bay wasn't fed all the time. We surely didn't watch every morsel she ate- and she surely benefited from young kids at home... It was an adjustment getting everyone on the same page. Ignore the begging brown puppy eyes.. With Dory my kiddos are much older so there isn't a dog sitting at a highchair waiting for droppings.. ;) They know that she isn't allowed a free for all- and they know she doesn't get ANYTHING off their plates unless pre-approved by myself or my hubby. Even then, it is a veggie or a fruit. LOL. Even my five-year old will say "Can she have this? It is healthy for her?" :)

Dory is about 20 days behind Penny and I think she looks great. Penny I think put on some weight this summer when the kids figured out that shoving junk food in her mouth kept her from trying to attack them. You can't really see it on her frame but her lower tummy is a little squishy. Thankfully all the kids are back at school and she can get back to a good eating routine.
I weighed her (holding her standing on the scale so give or take a couple lbs) and she right about 41 lbs.

Dory looks great!

I know how difficult it can be to have others think our pups are underweight, but they don't see then outcome in the long run.

So keep doing what you're doing girl! She looks great!

Here was Nala at Dory's age, she weighed 41lbs!

Kennel cough is an optional vaccine in Boston, but I got it for my puppy because we do go to dog parks and I occasionally board her if I'm working a night shift and my night-time dog walker can't come. Kinda seemed like a low risk vaccine for potentially high rewards if it allowed her to play with other dogs.

Piper is totally oblivious to rain, but my last dog Mae HATED the rain and hated puddles. As a puppy she was afraid of puddles, and she never liked getting getting her feet or really any part of her wet. It used to be such a pain to convince her to go to the bathroom outside if it was raining. Snow was fine though, which I totally didn't understand. She tolerated swimming. Definitely not as much of a water dog haha. Even as she got older, she got over the using the bathroom part outside, but always would walk around a puddle no matter how small or shallow if given the opportunity.

Wow Dory is only 5 months and 40-ish pounds.. and they think she's skinny?? so Mochi must be all skin & bones (he turned 8 months today at 47lbs)....
