HELP! Just had our boy neutered

Hey, guys, okay so I've seen neutered dogs before. A lot of them. But I've never seen any with this bad of bruising. Can any of you tell me if you've seen anything quite like this?

The vet said that it is just bruising and fluid, and the swelling should go down. The only thing I need to be concerned with is if it is draining or if he isn't eating/drinking, etc.

He's acting completely normal. It only seems to bother him when I touch it, or around it when I'm looking at it.

But what do you guys think? Should I seek a second opinion or should I just wait it out? The neuter was 3 days ago.

I've never had a golden until Mochi and he isn't neutered yet, but I've had my other terrier neutered and i don't remember looking like this because if it did I would be pretty alarmed, but maybe other GRF members can help you with it... it could be normal but i'm not sure...

I may want a second opinion if I were you. When Duke was neutered (and his was surgery similar to spay because he had an undescended testicle, it didn't look that "angry/inflamed".

I am so beyond irritated. I took him to a place that had good reviews and excellent recommendations after my vet wanted to charge me 500 dollars for a neuter....

Now, I wish I had just taken him to my regular vet!

I feel like the worst pet-parent ever

Don't freak out unless it's oosing out. It looks like a scrodum hematoma which is just a blood clot and not that uncommon after neutering. My Louie was just neutered and is just now at the end of his healing. His body will take care of it but beware it takes a bit a time. Louies is about 6 weeks now and it was way bigger than that. I was really scared and freaked out to but there were some people here who helped me out.

Now I am in no way an expert I can only tell you that that is how louies looked and what the vet told me. It maybe something else so maybe best to see another vet. Louie had cold lazar treatment twice a week for weeks now. Other than that with him it just took time. Best of luck. You are not a bad parent, it happens. Always a risk with surgery. He's on antibiotics I hope?

I've had a lot of dogs that I fostered go through neuter. What you have there is not normal, however, I have seen a few that bruised and even had swelling in the scrotum. The vet would have me hold a warm moist compress on the scrotum 3-4 times a day for as long as the dog would lay still, until it started looking better. It does help.

I am not a vet though, and you should ask your vet if that would be appropriate for this.

It looks like a hematoma maybe. If it were me, I would take him to your regular vet for a second opinion. I haven't personally seen a neuter end up looking like that, and I'm not a vet, but I'm a doctor and if a person had something like that, thats what I would think about. The reassuring part is that the area around it isn't too red and inflamed, which would be more concerning for infection. Hope he gets better soon!

I always think it's good to check in with vets, but I thought I would share my experience. When we neutered Ripley, he was close to a 1.5 years old. We had a lot of dark discoloration (a hematoma) and swelling and it continued to get more and more swollen. I took him back to the vet several times and then took him to another vet for a second opinion. The consensus was that it was normal - although I still wasn't convinced at the time lol. They recommended cold compresses at first and then suggested moving to warm compresses. They also gave us a pain medication in case we felt it was needed. It did get better, but it took a little time. Definitely worth a second opinion though.

We had the same experience and my dog was 3 and half old at that time.

Hey guys! Thanks for your feedback! I had scheduled a time to see my regular vet today but he actually looks pretty good today! I called back this morning and told them what it looked like. Fluid seems to be dying down, the sac is smaller - a lot smaller - and the bruising seems to be subsiding greatly. It's no longer black. Definitely getting a more fleshy color. They said that it probably wasn't necessary that he come in at this juncture but if I wanted to I could bring him, just to be sure.

I used to work at a vet hospital as a vet assistant, and I have a degree in Zoology and I've been around a lot of neuters... I freaked out because I had just never seen a neuter look quite that bad. My wife is in medicine, and just like you guys suggested, she said it looked like a hematoma.

I think he's going to be fine, though. When I first brought him home, I will say, I was mad because they didn't send him with an e-collar and he had a red ring around the site. I asked them if that was normal then and they said "just a slight bit of irritation. Should be fine" so it made me question their expertise a bit, I suppose. Red rings are never just something to shrug about, especially if you're not giving him an e-collar to keep him from licking the CLEARLY irritated site.
