Finley will be 5 months old on July 28th! It's bittersweet how fast the time has gone, but I'm so excited to see how he fills out as he continues growing. I swear he gets taller and furrier everyday!
We've been working on a lot of training and recall lately. We go for early morning walks off-leash (though I always bring the leash just in case) to practice obedience. He does really well majority of the time, but he is still a goofy baby so he makes mistakes.
He's mastered or made vast improvements on sit, shake, lay down, come, stay, and greeting human friends nicely without jumping.
My question for you all is: what are some other important, or just fun, commands you would suggest adding to his training? I'm really enjoying working with him, as he's just so quick to catch on and so eager to please! Plus he'll do about anything for a treat
Here he is a couple of days ago. I love this boy to pieces!
Your little guy is so handsome! I recently taught Trevor speak and then also speak quiet. I have never taught a dog speak quiet but I just kind of quiet barked back at him and he caught on in one single day and can now switch between speak and speak quiet pretty well. Have a little treat on hand and these guys are easy! lol
Would love to know how you taught no jumping. Trevor is 18 pounds now but a 50 pound jumping crazy dog will not be cute or funny. Do tell!
Oh gosh, that's adorable!! I think speak is definitely something I should try to teach him!
He definitely hasn't "mastered" the no jumping but has improved a lot. I always make him sit down before he's allowed to meet any new strangers. Whenever he's really excited to see me when I get home or something like that, I turn my back when he jumps on me and walk back into him until he steps down. I don't give him any pets until he's either sitting or calm! It's hard to resist the cuteness, but he seems to be catching on a lot and hopefully it will help for when he's much bigger
Cooper knows Shake, Sit, Down, Stay, and Speak! We're working on roll over and "leave it".
You should try to teach him to leave treats on his paws (when he's in a down position) and wait for you to give the command before he's able to eat it! Or you can try to do the infamous "balance a treat on nose" trick.
Thanks!! Balancing a treat on his nose actually may be pretty easy considering I throw balls in the air and he just lets them hit him in the face. He's such a goofball. He definitely needs work on "leave it" too, he has a mulch addiction!!
Okay, I like the sit thing and that is what I try to do but both my husband and I need to improve on making him sit every time.
The cuteness thing is bad sometimes! He knows sit, shake, shake left, high five, high ten, which I just call TEN, down, wait, and we are working on stay. He'll do them very well but sometimes, he gets excited and starts doing all of them at once, I could die! He's so cute. Another tip is if he is starving, he's less in learn mode. Also, he has a certain treat that he LOVES so I can't even use them when I am trying to teach him something. I go with a lower value treat of kibble. Works great.
Oh my goodness, Finley is so handsome, I could melt!!
How about "Watch me", where you teach them to make and hold a little eye contact? Helps to get their attention (sometimes...) when they're up to no good!!
I taught Kaizer roll over, Up, and I'm in the process of teaching him to walk backwards. Roll Over is cute - it's a definite people pleaser. Plus, it helps win over the people/children who are kind of wary of him. Up is short for Paws Up, he'll put his paws up on any flat surface I tell him too. He doesn't really counter surf anymore so it hasn't been a problem for us. I'm teaching walk backwards through shaping. I like seeing him think through things by himself and trying to figure out what works. He thinks it's fun too, if his furious tail wags are anything to go by
At 16 weeks Dory knows consistently: Sit, paw(and can differentiate when you say left paw, right paw), down, stay, leave it, speak, roll over, boom(play dead), get it, leave it. We're strongly working on "come". 75% of her tricks my 8-year old taught her and she picks up so, so, quickly.
Come will be the one I sing from the roof tops as she only comes about 75% of the time now.
OMG. He is so cute!!!!!!!!!!!
Mine is 5 months old and knows sit, down, stay, wait, come, inside (when he needs to get insidr of house), look at me, let's go (on leash walking)
Come is definitely something needs to be work on. At the moment, probably 90% success.
For fun stuff, we do "find it" after we hide treat or his toys. "Drop" is also another thing we do when we play fetch.
As most Golden are super excited dogs, I started teaching him "Chill" when he gets super crazy excited I tell him chill and he will go & laying down or sit & chew his toys or catch up his breath. It is kind of "place" others do but I don't really set any particular place he needs to chill. It can be under the table or in his crate as long as he can manage self clam.
Very handsome! You might google Bridget Carlsen, she is an awesome trainer and active in agility, obedience and who knows what else.
My pup just turned 5 months as well and having so much fun. I may never get a perfect score but love her method of training, she makes it all fun... it's just a series of games. Watching her pups is amazing and love to see a working dog enjoying the learning process.
