Finally I am starting a thread for Cedar, my baby boy. He’s 12 weeks today, came from a tracking family, and is a very smart and confident pup!

I never can do enough to tire him out, whether it’s playing or training at home or out for a 30 min sniff/walk. All except puppy school. He’s exhausted after puppy school and he will sleep for a good amount of time. At puppy school, my puppy is the one who can’t sit still. He has to eat the grass, dig up the grass, find that shiny thing in the field, also embarrassingly, throw tantrums when I forbid him my shoelaces. On week 1, he’s afraid of walking up and down the seesaw, and then on week 2, he’s jumping all over it, falling off it, and most importantly (to him) chewing it up.

Of course, his biting is just driving me crazy – all these bruises and cuts - and it’s taking all my strength to be patient and consistent. I’ve already spoken about that in another thread. But one good thing he’s learned is to settle down in his crate. He has a lullaby that I recite and if he’s moderately tired, he will go to sleep.

Another awesome game he’s learned is that if I sit at a particular spot and hold a particular toy, he will climb up my lap and bite that toy. He chews this till he falls asleep, and then I carry him to his crate.

Enjoy some pictures of baby Cedar!

He's so cute!! I think you may have gotten him confused with another pup, there's no way that little pup in the photos is anything but an angel! I love the plant pot picture :)

What do people think of Cedar's schedule?

10pm-5am Sleep
5am-630an Playtime, training with snacks, cuddletime
630-8am Sleep
8am-9am Breakfast then walk
9am-1230pm In crate
1230pm - 2pm Playtime, a walk and some training
2pm - 530pm In crate
530pm - 7pm Playtime, dinner, then walk
7pm - 9pm Sleep
9pm - 10pm Quiet time chewing
By 10pm Go to bed

I work full time, so during the day, he is in the crate 3 or 3.5 hours in the morning and in the afternoon. I was thinking of crating him 4 hours, because at some point I have to stop taking a day off a week and can't have such a long lunch time.

So proud of Cedar and yet omg such a struggle, I just want a lazy pup please!!

Cedar knows sit, drop, stay (stay with me kicking random objects around, stay with me out of sight for a few seconds), leave it (for 16s on the ground, on both paws), turn around and turn the other way, shake hands and high five (my left hand to his right paw and my right hand to his left paw, next will be to differentiate one paw and two paws). He's currently learning to differentiate crocky and teddy the names of two of his toys (3 or 4 sessions and he's not reliable yet), give is not reliable, up and off are also not so reliable or he chooses to be deaf and he's learning place. At breakfast time, he has two meals, one meal after leave it (20s) and the other one I hide it while he's eating and then I'll say find it.

The funny thing is he doesn't really know fetch. But find it (find food) - he got it down in one go lol.

Cedar had a puppy party thrown for him on the weekend. He met ~20 people who all gave him lots of love and attention and he received many presents, including a big furry dog bed (He loves furry things). I was worried he was going to nip everyone to shreds, but he was an angel - probably tired out from puppy school. So no one quite believes me that he throws massive tantrums! :grin2:

Crate training problems :(

Cedar now likes his dog bed more than his crate, and also probably because he is starting to learn that when he's in the crate is the time I leave him alone. Currently the crate is in the kitchen, which is next to my room. And he's crated roughly 9am and 2pm which is when I leave for work. I also sometimes crate him when I'm in the house but not in the kitchen The thing is, he took to his crate really well at the start and sleeps in there voluntarily but now i always have to take a treat to lure him in and he is starting to bark and whine, but not for long till he settles.

I think he's just tolerating his crate rather than liking it. He still sleeps really well in there though.

I guess I should look at the positives - he does settle and doesn't do that barking for half hour sort of thing. I didn't feed in the crate, but I have started it today. I also gave a kong to him in the crate, and he just sat down in there and licked it. Cedar doesn't really get kongs though I have to make them easy for him lol.

Today I tried leaving immediately after giving him a peanut butter kong, and then quickly left! lol. I have no idea if he barked or not or anything because I just shut the door, waited for 5 seconds, didn't hear anything and so just left!

I think it helps that I sort of messed up the routine - shower then crate him, crate him then shower, or do training then crate him, crate him then let him out then crate again. Totally confusing him up!

As I'm typing this - I took him out to a new park today and he was SUPER excited and happy....that he made a new cut in my wrist. Grr! But it was great seeing him take to all the new sights and sounds and play with water!
