Thats "Jake from State Farm"

What are you wearing ""Jake from State Farm""

"Khakis"

Thats the joke at our house now for this little guy that got delivered to us on Friday, 6/24 at 1:00pm.

Today was his 4 month birthday, we thought he was closer to 5 months when we agreed to foster him.

He's tall and skinny, weighing in at 25lbs. Previous owners were feeding him 1 cup a day. We have bumped him up to 1.75 cups a day because he feels underweight to us.

We went to the vet yesterday to get him setup. Since he's a foster the vet works directly with the vet office and we aren't responsible for any vet bills. He goes in for his vet visit on Tuesday.

Jake has some bad habits that the previous family, well, I don't know why he has them.
-Counter surfing
-Trash can digging
-Chewing stuffed animals in half
-Farts a lot
-His favorite toy was their wooden cocktail table leg
-He jumps off the BACK of the couches

So far he's learning sit. He's learned come. He knows "down" but doesn't know the command for it. So we are really impressed so far.

My wife has also heard him fart multiple times, so she's stopped blaming me- thats good!

I think we all know the answer to that lol.

We wanted to adopt a male that was 1-5yrs old. Wednesday we applied for a 9mo female dark golden and talked to the foster mom that night. Thursday morning we got informed a 4month old pup had just arrived and we reviewed the paperwork briefly and saw the photo and agreed.

Basically we have to foster him until he is fixed and recovered. Time will tell but he has such a wonderfully calming personality. When you take him out front he does his business and then sits in the shade under the tree. He wants to snuggle with you and gets so upset when you disappear.

So we have figured out a bad habit of his.

When you go outside (especially with Zoe), either myself or my wife, and leave him in the kitchen family room/kitchen with another person in that room he will go bonkers. He will scream and bark at the top of his lungs, and then run over and jump on the counter out of spite.

First time Ive ever dealt with a rebellious puppy lol.

Dogs don't do thing out of spite or rebellion. He is afraid, he doesn't want to be left, so when you leave him he panics. Try giving him a food dispensing toy, or a stuffed Kong when you leave him, or have the person still in the room engage him in play before you walk out.

He's super cute!

Had his vet appt today.

Got a clear bill oh health (waiting for stool and bloodwork results) at the visit. We got him up from 24.8lbs to 26.5lbs since we got him Friday. Vet says for his height he should be low 30's. Our vet even requested waiting until he was 9-10 months before fixing him to try and reduce hip issues.

So far everyone says he looks like a yellow lab, and time to time we see it. The vet right away said he was a Golden but the strips of fur that are on the back of his front legs.

So here's a new photo, of Zoe realizing she's made a huge mistake lol.

So Jake has a strange food guarding issue.

Zoe can walk up to him and take his food. She can take his treat as well. He doesn't fuss.

But if Zoe is eating her food, or a treat, he will try to take it and with growl at her.

Any ideas? I haven't seen behavior tailored this way before.

I don't know how I missed this thread! I got a good laugh out of Jake at State Farm. So glad to hear your wife no longer blames you for farts. My husband says that alone should be reason to keep this foster boy! That and the fact he is cuter than the dickens! Thank you for taking this cute little guy in (and for giving me a good laugh). No idea on the reverse resource guarding issue tho, I'm sorry, but I am definitely looking forward to the adventures of Jake:)

To join in on the consensus here, Jake is absolutely adorable. And the most important part is that Zoe seems to think so, too.

I hope he works out for you all and you are able to keep him. One thing to remember is that he's still new in your home and still figuring out where he fits in. It can take dogs weeks to months to truly settle and feel permanent. (But with a puppy I that happens more quickly.) If you keep teaching him stuff and training him, he will settle down pretty quickly.

What a cutie! You're going to have so much fun with the two of them.

We had somewhat of a rough night last night. They were lighting off some massive fire works, and then the gun range was open late that's down the road.

But we survived. We have him go to "mom" when he gets scared and he will curl up in a ball until whatever it is passes.

Here's one before the noises, he's quite ferocious looking sometimes.

And when things got noisy:

Well yesterday when Jake got up at 4am I decided to let him sleep in the bed with us after the potty break. He likes to sleep right in my spot, or with his butt on my pillow.

He got up and jumped off the bed (trying to avoid that from happening since our bed is 3' high) and trotted around and threw up on the floor. We wrote it off as a fluke and went on with our morning as planned. According to our security camera he got sick at 230pm in his cage, and then rolled around in it when he went back to sleep.

We were really worried when we got home since he didnt want to stand. Was chewing on his feet and trying to roll around on whatever he was standing on. Turned out he had some goop/dried wax in his ear. He got two baths, ears cleaned, and teeth brushed. Got some rice and Nutro power for dinner then passed out on me at around 1030pm. Slept clear through till 5am.

Feels MUCH better today. Running around and everything. We're thinking he could have just felt bad and then with all the stress from the fireworks the night before. He running around, wrestling with Zoe and the whole 9 yards.

It sounds like you're keeping an eye on him. As long as he's eating and drinking ok, no diarrhea or vomitting he's probably ok. I'd keep an eye on the ears. When Duke was his age I kept thinking he was getting dirt in his ears. Turns out it was an infection that made him sick. If ears stay clean you probably don't have to worry about that.

GRREAT is providing us a trainer who will be coming out to help us work with Jake on his counter surfing, begging, and leash habits.

He's doing super good and is just a little love bug. We put him in the crate now around 10-pm till when he wakes up at 1-2am. He's not waking up to potty, he just wants to lay with us. Today he managed to stay in our bed until 6am.

He's an itchy boy... Not sure if its because he's growing or if its from his food. We have him on Blue Buffalo Wilderness LBP. He was already on BB so we took the easy switch to the Wilderness LBP. It agrees with him, hes just super itchy in the mornings.

He's picking up weight too, from the 24lbs when we first got him, now he's up to 29lbs. I still cant believe they were feeding him 1 cup of food. He's currently getting 3.

I hope Jake's feeling better. You should ask the trainer about the fear of noises/guns. Dogs don't have to be afraid of guns or even fireworks. Especially if you live within a short distance from a range. And he's definitely not too old to be trained. You just have to make a positive association with sounds rather than a negative.
