My 15 week Bella was doing well sleeping 6 or more hours a night. She was going to bed 11:30 and getting up around 7. My husband switched shifts and he now gets up at 4:30 am. So we are in bed early. Last night 9 pm. Awake at 1 and doesn't really go back to sleep after that. I take her out potty and she might go back to sleep for an hour. She whines quietly but I don't take her out right away. This has been going on for over a week. I've tried feeding her later in the day as her last feed time was 4 pm and 12 hours without food was too long for piggy Bella. But if we don't get a poopy in after that also causes problems in the middle of the night. When she gets up she wants her breakfast and play time. This even happens when she goes to the babysitter all day and is exhausted when I pick her up.
Any suggestions?
Gracie is 13 weeks and is a sleep diva. She goes to bed at 9:30 or 10 and sleeps until 9:30 or 10 in the morning. Some days she gets up, eats, and goes back to sleep. LOL. I really lucked out with her. I wish I had some good advice. Is she crated at night? She is old enough to go all night. Maybe move her crate into another room and see if she settles?
I say if that's the new sleep schedule just stay consistent. Which you will only have to do for maybe another month. If you do the same thing every night when going to bed, like getting the puppy to pee outside and start relaxing and you start saying bed at night the puppy will know that it means it's time to sleep. The older they get it will be easier. My parents did this with their lab when I was younger and I've been doing it with my 14 week old Brixton. 2 weeks ago I started getting in bed an hour earlier which caused him to cry for about 5 minutes but after a week and a half he just knows to go to his bed when I start turning off the lights in he house.
Dory goes down around 9PM & we wake her around 6:30AM since I work. On the weekends, she sleeps until around 8. She naps once or twice a day solidly- napping now actually! So, we have a pretty good sleeper!
And my husbands shift will change again in August. Ugh. Maybe I need to slowly move her out of the room. She's a hungry girl, like she's starving.
She did have Giardia in the first week so don't know if that makes a difference. Have to have her retested next. She will nap throughout the day off and on.
But something is up, she plays at the babysitter really hard. With 3 other dogs all day. She should not walk up for hours.
Have you dewormed recently? Most Goldens are always "hungry" but if it's causing her to not sleep, that's a concern. Our 13 week old is last fed around 7PM and isn't fed again until about 7AM. And she's quiet as a mouse once we put her in the crate for the night.
Yes Bella is crate trained. Can leave her for 2-3 hours now. Sleeps the whole time.
That's during the day. Last night again we went to bed at 9 and she was up a 10:30 to potty.
And up at 2 to potty. Got up at 4:30 to potty and poop. Yes Golden's love their food.
Going to get a stool sample to the vet. She's due for rabies also. Something is up for sure.
Goldens do like to snoozy too.
I know it's not the best thing but maybe just lock her up in a square section (like 6x6) and a put a bunch of pee pads that way you can sleep all night. In the morning just take her out until she pees that way it's a routine that when you wake up that's when she will learn to know that's when to pee
Is she waking up because she has to pee or is she wanting to be up and she's peeing because she knows that's what you do when taken out? My boy will pee every time I take him out because he knows that's the rule. It may only be a little but he will try. He's able to hold it longer if he has to. Could she have a UTI? If you ignore her when she wakes an hour and a half after putting her to bed what does she do? Will she go back to sleep after a few minutes of crying? You may need to let her settle herself back down?
It is strange she's waking up if she's being tired out during the day. I wonder if she needs more mind games to tire her out when she comes home.
We'll it's a puppy there's no way they will be able to hold it all night right away. Eventually they will be able to and it won't take long but I did that with mine and focused on him when I was awake he started not go at night after 3 weeks
So another $300 later. Bella tested positive again for the pre giardia. Not at cyst stage yet according to the vet.
So more worming and shots. Vet said also to increase her food to 4 cups a day. She was at 3 cups and lots of treats.
So more antibiotices and worming. Still not sleeping well. She woke up at 2:30 last night and went
back to sleep until 4:30 am. We don't need an alarm clock because it's every morning at the same time.
Deworming done and now Bella is sleeping longer. She's in the big crate in our walk in closet right off our bedroom. She slept last
night from 8 pm to 5 am. That's the longest so far.
Back to waking up again. Ugh. And she goes to a babysitter during the day so she gets plenty tired. My groomer also babysits dogs so
Bella has 3 other dogs to play with and she plays hard. So she should be exhausted. I'm done with the deworming. Still on
antibiotics and low fat Royal Canine food because she gets diarreha when she's on the meds. And she's thin again, ribs showing.
She eats 4 cups a day.
And we went to bed at 9 pm. She woke up at 12:45 am and peed. Went back in the crate and started barking 20 minutes later.
Barking means something is serious not just wanting out. So back outside we go and we have to poop, I'm sure it was runny
but wasn't going to look at that time in the morning. Back in the crate until 3 am. Now there is no way I'm ready to get
up and husband will have a fit if she keeps barking so I get her and snuggle in bed. So I have her against me and the
old Golden on the other side. We all went back to sleep for an hour. Nice snuggly sleep. She has been chasing her tail
so something is up there. Deworming was done a week ago. For about 2 weeks she slept straight through the night so
don't get it. If this keeps up means back to sleeping downstairs on the futon for me so hubby gets sleep for work. Bella is 4 months
old and really should make it at least 6 hours by now. Don't get it.
My golden is the same age and I also had to deal with Giardia. Are you taking steps to make sure she isn't re-infecting herself? Washing toys and everything in the crate, taking her to a new spot to go to the bathroom (since it can live in the environment for weeks/months apparently), etc. I rented a shampooer from Lowe's and shampooed my carpet since he had diarrhea on it at one point (not fun!). Also consider the possibility that other dogs she comes in contact with have Giardia, since it often doesn't show symptoms in adult dogs.
For the diarrhea caused by antibiotics, I used Purina FortiFlora, which is a probiotic supplement that can be added to your puppy's food. This might be worth a shot since you are having problems.
