My poor Gracie

She has been off the antibiotic for 3 days and has another horrible uti. Poor girl keeps squatting and straining to pee. It breaks my heart to watch. She has been asking to go to the door every five minutes. Any suggestions on how to make her more comfortable while the meds kick in. This is one stubborn uti that just won't let go.

This is a nightmare. She has completely lost the ability to hold her urine and just goes without warning. I know it is the UTI, but I can't get her out in time. There is no warning. I hope that it is better by tomorrow and that she doesn't forget her house training that we've worked so hard on. She was going to the door this morning but now it is as if she has zero control. She had one dose of the meds this morning and will have one tonight. I have her in the xpen because it is on a vinyl remnant to protect the carpet and she is none to happy about that. :(. Any suggestion?

Get some organic apple cider at your local health food store, the Braggs brand. Start by adding a teaspoon to her water or her food. Do this every day for awhile. Even if she starts feeling better from the antibiotic, continue using the organic ACV as a preventative.

Sorry you are both going through this, it is tough on both of you.

As a puppy, my girl suffered with recurring uti's, after several rounds of antibiotics, I switched her to a different food, (free of chicken, corn, artificial preservatives or color), and she (now 8 yrs. old ) has not had a urinary tract infection since the food change. Food sensitivities can be a contributing factor to infections, urinary tract and ear infections (as I discovered with my male golden).
A food change may be worth considering.

The last two days Dory is totally regressing here! Sigh! I don't have any suggestions. She's back to a timer set every 20 minutes. I'd say it's UTI, too, but she's going a good amount- no dribbling. :)

Hope Gracie feels better soon!

I use Bragg's OACV, add it to the water, also have a bottle of it mixed with water I use before brushing my boy out. It has sooooo many health benefits.
Two of the Grocery stores in my area carries it.

Here's the info from Bragg's website-

Bragg Live Foods, Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar, Bragg Liquid Aminos,Systemic Enzymes, Bragg Live Organic Food Products, Patricia Bragg, Paul Bragg, Bragg Organic Olive Oil, Bragg Salad Dressings, Bragg Seasonings, Bragg Health Products

Hope your pups are doing better soon.

We just can't seem to kick this UTI. I hope this round does the trick. I am going to get some of the cider as well. She is on grain free food, so not sure what else I can do.

She is such a good girl though. Wouldn't trade her for the world. :)

Dogs can have problems with the meat/ or protein source as well, not just the grains, many dog foods contain chicken (for example) in various forms (meat, meal, by-products, or a source of glucosamine).
Did a bit of checking, it appears that the Taste of the Wild formulas contain fish, not that it is a 'bad' thing for many dogs, but may not be something she can tolerate. Perhaps try a different brand with no fish?

My old husky Jasmine would get UTI's every single summer. After about 4 years she got one that wouldn't clear up. 2 rounds of antibiotics, 3 vet visits and we had run out of $$ to continue. (husband had gotten laid off and I had used the rest of the available credit card to pay the vet) I ended up at the health food store desperate. We ended up putting her on Uva Ursi and cranberry. (echinacea, mallow, and probiotics are other helpful options) The infection that the vet couldn't clear up was gone in about a week. We treated her with herbs from then on and if we could catch it early could have her over it and back on track in a matter of days.

Please research a little before trying anything like that. Uva Ursi should never be used for long term as there can be some side effects. We would never use it for longer than 2 weeks. (though often we didn't need to for more than 1)

Gracie is doing so much better. I really hope this round cures it. I added the OACV to her diet to help. I have an appointment with the vet on Monday for her distemper booster so I am going talk with her about what could be the underlying cause.

We are having a super lazy day today. She went on two walks earlier and has decided it is too hot for that nonsense. 88 in Wisconsin is so rare in the summer. We are not used to it. LOL

She only had one accident the last two days and that was my fault as I was cooking lunch and didn't hear her whine for the door and my daughter (14) had her earbuds in. Ugh..

She is learning so quickly on what she can and can't do and has the best temperament. Her land shark moments are getting so much better and she LOVES everyone we meet on our walks and outings and every animal.

She loves to lay at my feet and chew on her toys. She has to be by my side at all times, which reminds me of my sweet Daisy. She is not going to like it when we all go back to school this fall. Might have to look into doggie daycare (there is one next door to our school so I could visit her during my lunch).

Thanks for all the tips. I'm really hoping that the Bragg's helps and that she doesn't have a hooded vulva or something that causes chronic uti's.

Well, I don't think the Amoxicillin is doing the trick. She can't seem to hold it. She will be playing and jump up and try to run to the door and just stop and squat. There is no warning at all. She is trying to get where she needs to be and most of the time she can, but it just seems like it may be lingering. I called the vet and am hoping they can see her again or give us a different med. Sigh. So frustrating.

Amoxicillin is just the first choice for UTIs. With the overuse, and resulting decrease in effectiveness, in kids, they are really trying to follow standard protocol in animals to prevent the issues seen in humans.

Think about adding cranberry extract to the diet, with your vets permission. It is thought that it prevents the bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall. It won't cure a current infection, but it might help prevent it from getting worse or prevent a new one.

And, FWIW, I don't believe in vaccinating someone who ill, be it human, canine or feline. A body can only take so much stress at a time.

We are sending in a culture to get the right meds. The vet gave us a cranberry supplement and she is off meds until Friday so we can get a good urine sample for the culture. Then we start on Clavamox until the lab notifies us if it is the right one. $300 so far. Lol. Good thing she is way worth every cent. Poor baby girl.
