Quieting my pup's crate

The other day we bought Chupie a bigger crate. He has loved the extra room and has now gotten used to it. Chupie does not like having a bed or mat in it as it's not as cool (in fact he pushes it to the side so he can be on the hard plastic). We immediately put carpet between the crate and the tray to make it softer for him and to prevent rattling between the tray and the metal. However in the last 2 nights we have found out that the plastic tray is very loud. You can hear his every movement from the claws hitting the tray and it has been waking us up constantly. I tried looking for other trays but they cost half as much as the crate...

Any of you have any ideas to make it quieter?

What about a rubber shower mat (if he will leave it alone and not chew it up)?

What we have in ours is a memory foam bathmat. It's rubber-backed so it doesn't slide around and is harder for Rocket to bunch up. But it isn't as cool as the bare tray.

The trouble with just about anything you put in the crate is that it is subject to chewing.....

If you go to a Farm Supply Store, they have a 4'X8' HEAVY rubber mat used for horse trailers. The cost around $40. It takes two people to handle them, but they are thick heavy rubber that a dog cannot chew on! Take it home and with a sharp razor cutter cut a piece to fit your kennel. Dogs love them, they are cool, and the price is right. You can cut the rust up for added pads or whatever. Pro trainers got me on to them to use in a dog trailer I use. Good Luck...

Just an update on this:
Yesterday we went to Rural King to look for the horse mat and we found it, but it was very sticky and the black color was rubbing off on me so I decided to wait and try to find something else because I didn't want Chupie getting black streaks all over his body....

Either way, when we got home I decided to turn the tray upside down and that worked wonders. We have a little blanket underneath the tray so that gives it support and the back of the tray is not rugged and is SO MUCH quieter...we finally got some good sleep last night!

Glad you found a solution....I should have mentioned that the horse pads need to set outside for a few days to finish curing. This stops any transfer of material and also eliminates the smell (like rubber) they have. The guys at the store should have told you this. I use them and they are great for my 3 goldens, and they cannot chew them as these are hard rubber!
