When it comes to teething my 14 week old ball of joy is in fully blown land shark mode. Some days are better than others. Today he is an absolute gem! I've been working on the no mouthing/biting since the day I brought him home. Though he kind of chooses when to listen, just like a puppy.

I tried something the other day and he has caught on remarkably quickly. But I feel very guilty every time I have to use this "reprimand". I took a soda can and put a bunch of coins in it. I shake it, hard, every time he chew something he knows he isn't suppose to. Such as the couch and my pant legs. It's been just three days, but the amount of naughty chewing has gone down drastically.

Also, I've realized just how incredibly smart he is! We have been house accident free for almost 3 weeks! He is showing me more ways to tell me he has to potty! It use to be just sit by the door. Then it was sit by the door and whining. Then he would bark to go out on the deck and sit and stare at me. This morning he grabbed my coat from on top of his crate, dropped it on the floor and stared at me. What a smart puppy!!

I've used a can filled with pennies for my dogs for years. It's not cruel, it works. Cruel would be hitting him on the head with it

I think it is a very good way of letting them know what is a NO NO.( coins in a can). Goldens are so VERY SMART! Lola is my first. At 8:30 AM every morning she comes into my office where I am at my desk and she puts her head in my lap and gazes up at me while "whapping" her tail on the wall to make noise. She lets me know it is time for breakfast if I am running late! If only they could talk they would!

We have also used the can with coins for many years.

Glad to know I am not the only one to use this method! I am a firm believer in positive reinforcement, but not always with treats. But positive reinforcement just wasn't cutting it! Time came for drastic measures!

Now the next big thing to really get down: loose leash walking!

What other things has your golden done to amaze you with their brilliance? He is my first golden. I have had a cocker spaniel and afghan hound in the past. My golden is definitely by far smarter!

Every time I see something about someone using this technique, I think of the time my best friend was taking care of Max for me while I was at work - she shook the cookie jar to get him and her dog to come get a treat and Max ran to the bathroom. She could not figure out what was wrong - so she tried shaking it again. Nope, no way would he come near her! She was very concerned when I got home, and told me she thought there was something wrong. I laughed - said, nope, we just used that can shaking thing to stop him from doing something - can't honestly remember what it was now!

So from then on, she took the cookie out of the can first!.

I never used the coins in a can, but I have heard it's very effective. I hate the sound myself so why would I want to put myself through it LOL. Instead I used a water gun, which can be just as effective.

I don't think its cruel, but i used something similar and it scared the hell out of isla.

We found the Pet Corrector spray worked better for us - still a loud noise, just a different kind.
