I am trying to figure out what shots my puppy needs. The lady I got her from (not a breeder) gave me a paper from the vet for what she had a 6 weeks old. It was basically just a list of different ones with a check on one of them (I dont remember what it was at the moment) and the date it was done. There was also a card for when her next ones were due, between 12/24-12/31. Due to the holidays I wasn't able to get it done during that point. We do not have a spacific vet, I am currently looking at places, prices and what shots are needed. However I'm having the hardest time finding a actual list of what shots are needed at what age. Can someone please help me!!!

In the UK we just make an appointment and the vet tells us what the animal (dog, cat, rabbit etc) needs. Should I assume it is not like this in the USA?

You've had this pup a couple of weeks now with no vet visit? She needs to see a vet & since there has been a break in vaccinations, she may need to start the series over. Are you even sure the piece of paper from the woman who sold her to you is actually from a vet?

Nope, that's how it's done in the US, too.

For your pup, you will need the next DHPP vaccine. The vet should be able to tell you what vaccines are needed in your area beyond that. You should be able to tell the clinic you call that your pup is 9 weeks old and is due for vaccines-you don't need to ask for specific ones. You'll probably also need to bring a stool sample.

We've only had her for 2 weeks. She's only 1 day past her due date. I wouldn't really consider that a break in vaccinations. I the number and everything for the vet. The lady said to call them if I had any questions.

If I went into the vet and said heres my dog what vaccines do I need heres how the conversation would go.

Me- "Hey Dr soso, my pup is 9 weeks old what vaccines do I need?"

Vet- "You need 3 DHLPP booster shots 1 month apart, then you need a rabies vaccine at 16 weeks. After that, yearly boosters, yearly rabies, bordatella every 6 months and lyme every year"

This is how the vets here anyway will do vaccines. If your dog is a day overdue, they start everything over. Lincoln got a rabies vaccine at 16 weeks, then 1 year later and the one vet tried telling me that since hes a week late on his rabies booster we have to do another 1 year then start 3 years providing im not late again. Did my own research and heres what I do

DHLPP at 8 weeks about (give or take) then DHLPP at 16 weeks. Rabies a week or so after that. Then, I rebooster everything 1 year later and then mine do not see anymore vaccines....except for rabies. My one guy cannot even get a rabies vaccine.

Lincoln- No vaccines since 1 year old. Hes 5 now. Ruby, no vaccines since 1 year old except rabies last year and that was her last one...shes 10 now.

Cats? My kitten has 2 boosters and a rabies. No more shots for him. My other cat...is 100% vaccine free and hes 3

Rabies is not compulsory here - i think you'd only get it if you wanted a pet passport. Kennel cough is also optional but i think most people get it.

What I read, in the U.S. Rabies is the only one that is required by law.
I just dont understand all the shots and am confused about what they are for exactly. I dont want to go into a vet and just say give her what YOU think she needs. I dont see it much different than deciding what vaccines to give a kid. Parents dont rely completely on what the Dr's tell them they need, so why rely completely on what the vet says.
