No solid "drop it" at all. Working on it. It's a tough one. Using a piece of kibble seems to work for now.

Don't allow the kids to do it. They can watch but your dog is likely stronger than them at his age so he would "win" which is a no no.

No tug.

How is he supposed to know if you are playing or not?
Pulling something from a dogs mouth swiftly is a safety issue eg a wayward sock.
I am quite relaxed with a lot of things but not with this. I do not teach him to bite harder or pull when I take anything from his mouth.

That's why it is important to teach out. When we play tug Tayla must "out" several times. Out is the command - tug is the game. Tayla is pretty smart and has gotten much better at giving up something I don't want her to have even when playing tug.

Awwww yeah Slater lives for tug and is his A+ most favorite reward in obedience training. I always make him do "something" for his tug toy even just in the house. It is a great reinforcer.

Tug is a great confidence builder for a dog that is very insecure. I played tug with Chance to build up his confidence. I would always let him win, (I still let him win every time), and would praise him when he did. It really, really helped when I first got him. Of course you can't let every dog "win", it totally depends on their individual personality.

I've always played tug with all my dogs and never had any issue with them stopping the play when I said so. Chance is the only dog I've ever let win, all the others I decided when to stop the game.

Sure, we play tug. I watched the Michael Ellis videos, and they are great. I used tug a lot to teach Cookie how to go from a really excited state to a relaxed state. She is really good at it now - if we are playing, I just say "Out" and she immediately stops and sits. We have a specific tug toy (a firehose tug I got on Leerburg.com) and Cookie never plays with it without me.

Also, a lot of people say to never let the dog "win", but my goal would be to have the dog enjoying herself and wanting to bring the tug back to you for more play.

When Tayla was biting in her first 8 months with us, that was one of the impulse control things we used tug for. She gets so worked up and she had to sit. She would back up a few feet, sit and I'd count to ten slowly. She had to wait quietly and then I'd throw it to her. As she got good she would have to wait up to 30 seconds. Now, she will sometimes drop a ball in my lap and back up several feet and just sit. I sometimes don't even notice for a little bit and she just sits looking at me until I notice. The she gets a good ball toss out of it. I think the way we have played has 1. built her confidence; 2. taught her some self control and 3. helped with her retrieval skills.
