wow it is so crazy about the parvo. We live in a hot climate and in a fairly populated area and our vet told me that there isn't any parvo around here. I was asking her about that because I have Peaches registered in puppy kinder and I was worried about that myself. Our local kinder is restricted to ages 8 to 14 weeks old. They have to have their second set of vacs, though. If not then we have to hold them and they can't get down.
Luckily, she will have had her second way before that.
What a bummer for you guys!

You are fortunate to live in an area where I know you have so many more options available to you than I do. It's the price I pay for living in a Tourist area.

I really think it is important to socialize a puppy as soon as possible. I do agree in putting them into puppy kindergarden.
But.... and it is a big one....... I would never put a puppy that doesn't have all of its shots in a box store puppy kindergarden.
In other areas of the country that are not having the same problems as you are with parvo (private schools) do let their pups in after having their second shots. In those private schools the owners/instructors make sure that all the dogs that are coming to classes are up to date on all of their shots.
In the box stores anyone can walk in with their dogs which can put your puppy at major risk.

You can do meet and greets with dogs that you know are safe and friendly while waiting for all the shots.

I don't look at puppy kindergarden as important for the pup to meet other dogs but for the owner to learn how to teach their puppy. If you are doing all the other types of socialization (the hundred different people) twelve or more surfaces, having the puppy experience gloves, hats, umbrellas, cars, trucks etc which from another of your posts you are, you are way ahead of many owners.

I think you know how to train a pup/dog. And if there is something you want to explore differently you have the knowledge right at your fingertips or from those you trust on here.

I remember some of those posts and I believe you shouldn't second guess yourself. In the case of your area Yogi's health and safety comes first. Then you can try and look outside the box to work around things until he has his shots.

Yes, and the trainer is the one I'm going to use. Our vet is also very anti-early kindergarten classes until all shots are done. Of course, she's seeing that parvo puppy in the clinic daily so I guess she has a different perspective than the rest of us.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to look into the place Belle's Mom suggested, hoping they exercise adequate sanitation practices for classes.

Thanks, I'm going to look into a private kindergarten, but if I cannot find one I'm satisfied with we will make do with friends and neighbor dogs.

I do know how to train a puppy, so I am not a novice. We did a great job socializing our first golden, whom we adopted from a shelter at 4 months, without any adverse consequences. The fact that Yogi (as of this afternoon after two different outings) has met 139 different people, been on more than 20 surfaces, experienced all sorts of noises (including trucks, airplanes, buses, trains, a live jazz band, flying in an airplane,etc) and met all different types of people, all in 8 days, speaks to how much I want to properly socialize him.

I would never go against my dog's vet judgement when it came to the health of my dog. If he were to get sick how the heck does one face the vet? And knowing that I deliberately did that to him is something I would never want to deal with. JMO

I looked into Park Cities Obedience that Belle's Mom suggested- at first I thought they had gone out of business but I finally found them. They require vet consent- that's NOT happening so cross them off. I have a feeling the places here in Dallas do not want the liability risk of a dog in their programs contracting parvo so all are going to be requiring all the puppy shot series. That settles it, it's private parties for us.

When Kenzie was in the petsmart class back in Sept/Oct they only required puppies to have 2 sets of shots.

That is the same I'm looking at for classes with Bertie, although he will have all three rounds of vax by the start of classes.
