We will not be breeding or showing our dogs so is there an advantage to AKC register your dog or not?
thanks

I was reading over the health Guarantee portion of my contract from our breeder and it says that in order for the Guarantee to be valid that the pup must be registered, along with a few other things...you may want to check and see if this is something in your contract or if your breeder has any issue if you decide not to.

I also love the possibilities it gives, like registering on k9 data and connect your pup to parents, siblings, etc. Both my girls have parents that are registered, too, so the k9 data connection gives me the opportunity to get a lot of information about their ancestors.

With Zeke we never sent in the registration for the reasons you mentioned but now I wish we had . . . just really as a way to have him listed in the history of pure bred dogs. After he was gone I pulled out those papers to see what was there and I was amazed. When we got him I didn't have a clue who or what any of the dogs in the pedigree were.

Even though you don't plan on breeding or conformation, your dog needs a registration number if you're going to compete in AKC events like rally, obedience or agility. You might find you want to try them. So I'd recommend registering.

Glad you decided to register him. As said so well above, the registry allows the breed to be followed. Many can trace their ancestors back a long way. K9 Data is available by googling and you can add your dog, add and update pictures, if you get your health certifications, they can be listed and when he/she goes to the Bridge you can put this too. By registering your dog then putting the information in K9 you make a page in the Big Book of Goldens. Fun on a rainy day to trace your dogs history and a big help to others who want to trace breeders.

Also you just never know what you might decide to try with your dog and many things are sponsered by AKC so must be registered. Doesnt cost much and a good thing to do.

It is useful if you want to show in obedience, etc. And as an AKC breeder of merit, I encourage it....

I haven't registered Bryley yet, but recently took out the papers to look them over. I do not think there is a time limit, but the fee does increase after a certain amount of time- maybe one year? I do know we are past and the fee is higher.

I did not know that the owner inputs their dogs info on K9 Data. Is that right? I always assumed it was the breeder.
