As many of you know, we are bringing home our handsome puppy in less than two weeks! I think we've got everything we need, but one issue I'm still mulling is pet insurance. As a young couple just starting out, we *need* pet insurance both for our peace of mind and to keep our savings account intact. But my question is, when should we get it? Should I enroll now at 6 weeks of age, or wait a while? I guess what I'm looking for is feedback on how often major vet trips came up for your puppy, and whether pet insurance was/would have been financially beneficial. For the record, the plan I'm going to purchase is through Pet Plan, $200 deductible, 100% coverage for about $30/month. Thanks!

I have petplan- about the same plan you are getting. I pay about $30 a month. The first year is the one of the most expensive. I activated mine the day i went and picked him up. I haven't had to use it, but I have it mainly for when he gets cancer or something down the line.

Just thought I would add- I am 22, hopefully going to be in school again so I don't have a ton of money to fork out if something went wrong (like foreign body, etc).

Thanks for the feedback! I'm pretty much in the same situation (24, student loans to pay back, woohoo) and I don't want to ever have to choose between my dog's health and my finances.

Yes, those student loans... Mine start up next month- ugh! Though I can thankfully defer them. No problem, I hope that it helps. I'd much rather waste $30 a month if I don't need it than not be able to pay for something Beamer needed.
