I went into Petland today and saw among many dogs two beautiful golden pups in a little cage. One looked so sad in boredom. The other one wiggling trying to contain her energy. I know they take them out every so often but I just kept picture my little Libby in there. My girl has so much energy and curiosity. She NEEDS constant stimulation and these poor pups were in a box with nothing, not even a playmate. The store owner came over as I was looking at them and said these pups had to go by this weekend because they were getting too old (13 weeks) What happens if no one buys the older unwanted puppies? Leaving that store I just had a bad taste in my mouth. Not saying that buying from a pet store is wrong, I just wish they could do more for their pups. And you have no idea how bad I wanted to take those pups home with me. Don't think the hubs would like 4 dogs though. lol

Praying these dogs find good homes.

That's so sad. I live in a rural area with no pet stores that actually sell pets, we just have a Petco and a locally owned pet supply shop (which is my preference even though I appreciate Petco's rescue events). If possible, I would do your pet shopping elsewhere rather than giving your money to this place and inadvertently supporting a puppy mill. You'd be surprised at the amount of identical merchandise available on Amazon, often at a fraction of the price!

I do hope someone gives those pups a good home.

I'm saying it and I will continue to say it to anyone that will listen. Then again, I'll say it to those that won't listen, too. Buying a puppy from a pet store is wrong!!!!! This is a major hot button issue with me. I hope that you avoid this store in the future and refuse to purchase anything from them. And tell your friends, relatives, everybody to do the same. They need to go away and the only way to make that happen is to boycott them.

What that man told you was a sales pitch. If the puppies are there too long they go on sale. All of them will eventually find homes. It's not the puppies you need to feel sorry for, it's their parents. Every puppy or any pet supplies bought from these stores condemns them to producing more and more puppies to supply these shops. They live in horrendous conditions and are bred until they can't produce anymore. Then they're tossed away like garbage.

Again, please avoid this store in the future, they don't deserve to be in business...

Several cities have now passed legislation against the sale of dogs in petstores. I was involved with the very first city in Canada that passed this law. Petland was the biggest company that this affected. The rep from Petland used to be a vet too! Can you imagine?

Anyways, my point is if you'd like to do something about these poor pups one of the things you could do is start a campaign. Several other cities have now successfully passed legislation. Some other members on the forum were involved as well.

A campaign also raises awareness which is actually more impactful than shutting down one petstore.

You are so right. I will take my business elsewhere from now on... I don't know what would attract people to buy these puppies as they are so expensive for "puppy mill pups" The goldens were $1500.

Well if I didn't have two puppies already I would want to save those poor pups and give them a good home. Didn't mean to start an argument. It just melted my heart seeing them today..

It's the "omg puppies are so cute I must have one right this instant" mentality - unsuspecting folks walk by, see a cute doggy in the window, and by it on the spot without any serious thought. Meanwhile, the pup's mom is bred over and over in barbaric conditions until she's outlived her usefulness, at which point she's usually killed. I've never had a puppy before, but I've had rescue cats all my life and it's a similar story there.

And yes of course puppies are cute and I do wish mine was here with me this instant, but I sleep a little better at night knowing his momma is well taken care of too! I hope one day everyone knows the truth about pet stores...just so awful.

It is really sad that most people still don't know where pet store puppies come from. I found out from a YELP review.. I looked up the pet store in a mall I used to frequent and I read reviews from people saying the pups were from puppy mills. I was in high school, never even heard of puppy mills. These things should be taught in schools or something..

No argument from me - I agree that it's heartbreaking. Once I found out about puppy mills, I wasn't even able to walk in those stores anymore. But so many people still somehow don't know - that's why it's important to discuss it!
