Bringing home a golden retriever puppy in 2 weeks-anyone have any good tips? Hi! I'm a new member to this forum, and I was wondering if anyone had any good tips for me. We are bringing home a new male golden retriever puppy in 2 1/2 weeks (8 weeks old by then); we currently have an 8 year old purebred female chocolate lab that we have had since she was a puppy. I am a little concerned because our current dog hasn't had much interaction with other dogs; however we are very competent dog owners-someone is at home with our dog at least 90% of the time. Compared to a lab, is raising a golden very different? What is the best way to introduce our current dog to our new dog? Thanks for your help!

My words of wisdom ... get lots of sleep now while you can LOL ![]() I remember when we brought Keltey home I thought I'd never be able to have a full night sleep again haha ... it got better after a few months when we both got into a routine and I can laugh about it now, but at the time I thought I was going to lose my mind ![]() Congratulations on the new puppy, I can't wait to see pictures!!

I don't have any advice to offer, just wanted to say welcome! We're bringing home our first puppy in 3 weeks and are counting down the days. Do you have everything you need in terms of puppy supplies - toys, teething aids, grooming tools, crate, etc.? I find that perusing the dog aisle at my local pet supply store helps to pass the time

| wow there are a lot of us new puppy owners with pups born in October! Ours was born on the 18th and we bring her home in two weeks as well. I have no advice for you, you probably know a lot more than I, but I wanted to say hi! Good to meet you!

Lol mmcleod .....but true! It was like having a new baby in the house, & I had totally forgotten what that was like! But Loki wasn't actually too bad & at 16 weeks old, we are now getting a good sleep, though we would love to get to bed earlier than 11.30pm. The last three days, we have been woken up by the alarm clock, & this morning we had a ten minute lie-in after it went off, before Loki started barking. Kskylis .....welcome! How exciting that you will soon be adding a new GR baby to your family. We have a six year old papillon, & he quickly accepted Our new GR baby, who was seven weeks old & a bit bigger. A friend of mine has just added a new black lab baby of seven weeks old to her family, & no problems at all between the new baby & the two year old black lab she already had. Both of us did the introductions at home, due to the worry about new babies only having had one vaccination shot & the risk of Parvo etc. but maybe introductions could be done somewhere safe, such as the home of a friend or family member who does not have a dog. Let us know how it all goes ...I presume the breeder will send you home with a supply of food that the puppy is used to, as you do not want to change to a new brand & cause tummy probs ....& feed baby separately from your dog, or the older dog will gobble down the food & pup may develop resource guarding. Also, keep baby away from older dog's food, as your Lab may not take kindly to having a puppy stealing its food ...& eating it would probably give your baby an upset tum. Enjoy your new baby & be sure to post pics. I see you are from Michigan. I am a New Zealander living in NZ, but my two older sons both live in Michigan, & we were over there visiting with them & their families in July this year. Also spent time in Ann Arbor & On Mackinac Island .....both beautiful places. Last edited by Dwyllis; 11-28-2012 at 06:53 PM.
