| Help with "sick" puppy! Hello Golden Lovers! My boyfriend and I have a 4 year old golden, Waylon, and we recently purchased a new golden on October 7 at 6 weeks old. He is now 11 weeks. When we picked him out we didn't notice this problem that we have now found ourselves in. The night we got home I noticed his breathing was not normal. He breathes very loud through his nose almost like a wheezing and sometimes we hear a click like sound coming from his nose. He did have some clear drainage so the next morning I decided to take him to the vet. The vet seemed very concerned that he might have pneumonia so they did x-rays. X-rays came back negative for pneumonia(thank goodness) so the vet decided that it was just an upper respiratory infection. We are now at 11/14 and we are on our second round of antibiotics and $500 deep in 2 rounds of chest x-rays. The vet cannot figure out what is going on but has about 8 different ideas of what it might be. She suggested us doing a lung wash next. This would require us to sedate our puppy. All in all with the ideas that our vet has given us, it seems like a lot of trial and error tests that are going to cost us a small fortune. I want to add that Toccoa, the puppy is eating, drinking, playing, chewing, sleeping...all things normal puppy! He does not act sick that is why this is stumping us all. I would list what the vet said but I wanted to get some thoughts from you all as to what you think we should do and/or what yall might think he's got going on. Go with the lung wash? Second opinion? All ideas and comments are welcome! THANK YOU! Last edited by SavannahGolden; 11-14-2012 at 10:54 PM. |

| I would ask your breeder, and see what she says/thinks. Also, many breeders would at least pay a portion of the costs for a problem that was present when the puppy went home. I would not start doing invasive things to a puppy without at least a second opinion from a specialist.

| Definitely a second opinion, preferrably with a specialist. I would NOT do any invasive treatments if he is acting like a normal puppy. At least not until a specialist has examined him and says it's needed.

| I talked to the breeder when they first thought he had pneumonia and the breeder said they would cover up to the price of the dog and then they came back and said they would only cover half of the cost of the first set of x-rays which was $150. I called the UGA vet and they said we needed a referral from our vet and just a exam would cost us another $150 |
