Settling into a routine

Well, we've had Gracie now a week yesterday and we've got a routine going. House breaking is going well, only 1 accident. I'm also proud to say that wednesday she started going to the door whining to let me know when she needs out. She's fed 3 meals a day, and every 3 hours even if she doesn't ask she's walked at least 1 trip around the block. She does have a few habbits i'm trying to break. She ALWAYS wants something in her mouth and when out rocks seem to be her item of choice. I swear every 2 minutes i'm like a broken record..."no grace, leave it"...while removing yet another gravel/rock from her mouth. Another issue is she's mouthy, and while i know she's teething and her teeth/gums hurt, those puppy teeth are needle sharp. if she starts getting mouthy or trying to jump and latch onto a pantleg the command i've chosen is off, followed by a sit. she listens, albeit sometimes only for 20 seconds or so before she goes right back at it. I soo dream of the day months in the future when teething is over lol. I wish i could find a place where there was a training class near by but so far have had no luck...i'd love to take her to at least a puppy kidnergarten class for basic obediance. On my own were working on Sit, Down, off, leave it, and stay. we have sit down pat...i can say it once and the but hits the floor. down is coming and stay...well.....were trying. Leave it, if it's not a rock, she'll listen half the time....if its a rock....most times she completely ignores it. But we are young, only 10 weeks old now as we thought when we got her she was 10 weeks old but the vet aged her at 9 weeks last friday. I also think i'm a glutton for punishment, both times now we've gotten our goldens in winter. Ginnie came along in february when it was still freezing..but at least then on those cold 3 am walks i knew spring was right around the corner....with i'm shivering i know its only gonna get colder. But in the end its all worth it...especially at times like right now. Rosie's up and happily watching her saturday morning cartoons, Ginnie's snoozing in the living room beside her and i have a very happy *and sleeping* puppy thats been up since 5 am conked out for a hour or so as i enjoy my 2nd pot of coffee this morning. who needs sleep right.

It sounds like she's doing great. A lot of dogs really like having something in their mouths. Is there something she could carry on her walks so she doesn't pick up rocks? I got Tucker a black Kong "bone" a while ago and he and Bella both love to walk around with it. Something like that might work.

If you want new things to teach her, poke around on the Internet and YouTube. There is quite a bit of information on dog training. But some isn't so great--be picky!

Congrats on your baby settling in so nicely.

Lol rocks are just the start. I went bonkers running after Lily picking out everything from her mouth.

Just usual puppy antics it sounds like! Also, puppies don't start teething until about 4 months old (16 weeks).

Rocks sticks paper or whatever they can get in their mouths is fair game for a pup, just be watchful they are quick and hopefully if they manage to swallow something hope they pass it. My pup is 7 mos and still put everything he can in his mouth. The mouthing is usually over at about 51/2 mos when their teeth are in have fun till then and try not to lose your temper even when it hurts when the little land sharks get you.

Thanks everyone, as frustrating as she can be at times i love her and wouldn't trade her for anything. i also know these puppy months will pass by all to fast and what will seem to be the blink of a eye it will be 10 years down the road and i'll be staring at a dignified senior with a greying face and wondering how time could have passed so fast. Ginnie had her antics too as a pup.....and 2 shall always stay in my mind. the first was when she was about 4ish months old and in full blown teething mode when she managed to sneak and get ahold of mom's new fishing pole, and ate the cork handle grip off. Mom was furious and admittedly i was laughing because even though she had bits stuck to her fur and a piece hanging from her mouth she was all innocent looking and clearly was trying to convey "what, i didn't do was the cat". wound up being mom's luckiest fishing pole and she still uses it to this day. The next memory is when she was 7 or 8 months old and came inside to find her laying in the middle of the kitchen table scarfing down the chicken mom had laid out to thaw. first and only time she ever jumped up on tables or attempted to counter surf.

and since we all know the best kind of golden puppy is a sleepy golden puppy i have 2 new pics to share.
