Christmas Prep is Starting....

^ Well, one recipe at a time. This would be the walnut crescents fresh out of the oven and the bowl of powdered sugar where they go next....

The finished product....

I wasn't sure how Bertie was going to be with all the baking. And envisioned me having to chase around the house with dough fingers. So I pulled the big wire crate out and we did a little bit of training while I was working.

Go in the crate = praise = treat sometimes, etc

His brothers watched...

Arth...

Jacks...

And one by one...

By one... two... three...

Decided to cash in with that magic crate floor from whence treats spring to life...

As long as Mom makes it so...

REALLY... make it SO~!

I guess somewhere along that point I decided to kick the dogs outside to get some "Fresh" air (rainy, cold, drab, moldy, gross outside) -

Bertie thinks Mother Nature is awesome. All the excess water he can drink...

He's ignoring the horror stories Arth is telling him about ameobas and alien parasites that hang out in raindrops...

Even Jacks got back up to the house LONG before the pup was ready to leave the wetness of outside behind...

Whooohooo!

Wheee!

Jacks: "Weirdo. She'll give us treats when we go inside. Let's go inside. Now. MOM! He's not listening!"

All that running around made him thirsty again...

Whoohooo!

Arth says he deserves extra treats for finally herding the gremlin back into the house.

Of course by that time, the pup was pretty much READY to come in, even without the promise of a treat.

Well, it lasted a few minutes anyway.

Oh this? This is how you make pretzels.

I admittedly would never have thought of boiling them first before baking them. It DID stop them from puffing up like bagels though!

Salted knots...

And baked.

It's starting!

Same here! I keep telling everyone not to eat them all or I want have any to make trays for Sunday and Christmas Day! I've already made 5 kinds of cookies, and still want to do my cutout cookies, pecan tarts and chocolate covered peanut butter balls. And the girls want to do chocolate dipped marshmallows for their friends.

I was planning to do dessert for Christmas eve and Christmas Day (apple and pumpkin pie and a really YUMMMY dark chocolate torte with peppermint whipped cream). But a friend of my in-laws offered to make them a dessert for Christmas Day, and she runs a cafe with award winning chocolate desserts. So I'm gracefully bowing out of that one.

And then one of the women I work for just sent me a chocolate peanut butter cake from Neiman Marcus. So that will take the palce of my wonderful chocolate peppermint torte.

Oh well...less work for me!

@Charlotte and Tina - I normally have a full freezer full of cookies. And we freeze them so that family members DO NOT EAT before Christmas Eve. But have been pulling back this year and only making family favorites (walnut crescents and kolacky). All my sisters bake too, so we will have more than enough on Christmas week.

Deserts - I'm planning on eggnog cheesecake and polish coffee cake.

Normally I make a cheesecake and then also cheesecake bars, but I'm pulling back on the bars too.

My other sister does cheesecake too... and the other sister makes baklava. <- I've been toying with the idea of making a variation of baklava which is like cigar rolls. One of my coworkers' wife worked at a middleeastern restaurant and he always brough in a box full of different pastries. Those rolls were what I zeroed in on vs the diamond shaped baklava because you didn't get sticky fingers when you ate them.
