"better choices" at the grocery store?

In all the reading I've done, here and other places, about dog food I found a lot of recommendations for brands that aren't available to me without traveling 60+ miles. My understanding is that all the mainstream foods are pretty poor, what are some of the better options available in the mainstream? Aside from the usual grocery stores we also have Petsmart; which seems to be over-priced. Cooper is currently on Pedigree puppy and doesn't seem to mind, but he tends to go for Alia's Ol Roy (which we are scrapping) when he thinks we aren't watching.

ANYTHING is better than Pedigree or Ol Roy... almost literally anything.

For grocery store, try Purina ONE...

But MUCH better is to go to Petsmart and try Nature's Recipe. It's pretty cheap, and very good and free of corn, wheat, and other fillers.

For a bit more you can get great results with Blue from Petsmart. Nutro Ultra isn't bad either.

I've been ordering mine from Pet Supplies, Dog Supplies, Cat Supplies, Pet Meds & Pet Products: Drs. Foster & Smith Pet Supplies since the beginning of the year. I think that it is a good quality food . I have been keeping an eye on how my dog's have been doing and their coats are still nice and soft, clean smelling, no itchiness and no ear infections. Even with shipping charges it is still reasonably priced considering that I don't have to leave the house to get it plus I always get my order in 3-4 days.

The best I've seen at the grocery store is Purina ONE. Pro Plan and Nutro Natural Choice at Petsmart are better (not sure of the price difference since I don't even think about buying anything like that), and most people see a lot of improvement on the really high-quality brands. Blue, Avoderm, Active Care, and ByNature are good brands available at Petsmart depending on the store. If you have Petco they also sell Natural Balance which is good too. Petsmart does seem overpriced initially but if you compare the ingredients and look up what is actually in those ingredients, it's a huge difference in quality.

I went to a local pet store that has been here for many years and spoke with the owner about the foods he carries. Cooper slept at my feet the entire time. I ended up getting a 20lb bag of Nutro Natural Choice - Large Breed Puppy. I gave him about a 60/40 mix of it when we got home and he ate it all. He was a bit finicky about the Pedigree from the get go.

My 2 goldens were on the Nutro puppy food and they really liked it, and did very well on it...it was when I was switching them over to adult food that I couldn't find one that I liked.

My first golden ate Pedigree her whole life and she had lots of allergies, itchy kin, and ear infections. Now that I'm more knowledgable about corn in the dog food I can see why Sasha had so many problems...I think (I could be wrong about that but I think that is what I read) that corn is first on the list of ingredients in the Pedigree food.

Mary that was PetPointe. I did order the Canidae from them last month. I ordered it on a Friday and think it got here on Tuesday. Very fast, I was impressed! It was quite a bit cheaper than getting it here locally.

The store I purchased the Nutro at had me fill out a rebate form. If I buy 10 bags within fourteen months I'll get an 11th bag for free. He really seems to like it right now. I need to see what I can find for Alia now. A friend at the bike shop told me to check out the store and said he feeds his golden the Nutro as well.

I feed the Nutro Natural choice also. I could use the frequent buyer program at the local feed store, but Petsmart's price is usually $2-3 less than the feed store price.

I'm glad you found somewhere to get a better food. Deciding what to feed can be confusing sometimes.
