Necessary vaccinations and deworming?

I'm wondering what vaccinations would you guys say are important for a golden puppy located in Ontario, Canada to get? The person I purchased him gave me a little health sheet that shows he's received parvovirus, cav2 hepatitis, distemper, and parainfluenza shots. He's also been dewormed once. Is there any more necessary shots to get for my area, mainly things that are life threatening, and are known to be in my area, how many more deworming treatments does he need too? Thanks

Discussing vaccinations can always be tricky. Not everyone always agrees on what's appropriate!

I always think that it's best to discuss with your veterinarian about what vaccinations they suggest for your area.

That said, as a nurse, I'm also a HUGE proponent to knowing what doctor is talking about, and going in to the discussion with some kind of education.

The Ontario Veterinary Medical Assoc. has a website that has information about what each vaccination is for and how it's available. IMHO, it's a bit biased in suggesting that you vaccinate your animal with everything under the sun.

I also like to look for reports about current diseases that could potentially affect my pets. For example, tick born diseases in southern Ontario are very low to begin with, and I rarely visit areas (where ticks normally live) with my dogs, so I would probably avoid giving my dog a vaccination for lyme disease.
However, the dog park I go to is beside a wooded area, where raccoons and squirrels potentially live. Knowing that Leptospirosis is making a come-back in southern Ontario, I made sure to vaccinate against that this year.

Your pup has already received what I am under the impression of being the more common of puppy vaccinations. I'd probably continue with that regime and add in the rabies and bordetella when appropriate (according to your vet).

Is one vaccination enough, or do they need multiples. Also what would u guys say the general cost of each regiment of vaccinations is, just an estimate pls

Hi and welcome .

I am in the US so the law is probably different.

Chance got his initial set of puppy vaccinations and then the booster shots.

After that we have done titres to check his immunity levels. He hasn't been re-vaccinated since he was 1 year old. His levels have remained been in the "protected" range.

Titres are more costly than the vaccinations but it's a personal decision in consultation with Chance's veterinarians. This can be a controversial issue and it depends also on the exposures in different areas too.

Chance has been vaccinated for rabies.

Wish I could help more with prices but they probably vary between the US and Canada.

I recommend Dr. Dodds limited vaccination schedule to all my puppy buyers. I DO NOT recommend lyme vaccine - ever!!! It can create an immune response that in essence is the body showing lyme symptoms and does NOTHING to protect against a host of other tick borne diseases. American Animal Veterinary Association has a great article with a table on all of the vaccines and what is recommended by them (typically a 3 year re-immunization).

Really, any others that are bad?

All vaccines have a potential for adverse reaction but you have to weigh the pros vs cons with them - see what risks you have locally and go from there. Lepto is another that can cause bad reactions and only covers certain strains. IMO bordatella is useless in most circumstances...

Not all but lots of vets will push all vaccines at yearly intervals because 1) it is income and 2) they don't always keep up with the most current research/learning.

The "puppy package" at my vet is $499. It includes the parvo and distemper boosters through 16 weeks, with vet checks and dewormings. It also includes nail trims and flea control, if needed. Not cheap but when we broke out the basics, individually, that I would use it came to an additional $50 so I went with the puppy package.
I only do the basic core vaccinations...parvo and distemper. My state also requires rabies at 4 months but I am going to try put that off until at least 6 months.
Congratulations on your new pup! How old?

What your pup got is the first DHPP (Distemper , Hepatitis, Parainfluenze, Parvo). The 2011 vaccines guidelines for puppies ask for three vaccinations spaced out 3 or 4 weeks apart. So, according to this he needs another round of the same at 12 weeks and 16 weeks. The last recommended booster for that particular combination is one year after the vaccination in the series. After that, every three years for DHPP.

Rabies, in the US, is done at different ages according to either state law or local law. I need to check what Toronto's law requires before I can tell you when he would need that in you particular case.

Other vaccines are considered non-core. This means that they are given on an as-needed basis according to where the dog lives, the dogs' activities, and the owner's lifestyle. In my particular case, I choose to give Bordatella because I may need my dogs to be boarded from one day to the next in an emergency. While I am aware that the Bordatella vaccine does not protect 100% no boarding place will take the dogs without it. If it is given ahead of boarding time, the chances my dogs contract kennel cough while boarded is reduced. If is is given on boarding day, it is useless since it takes about 10 days for immunity to develop.

In short, you need two rounds of DHPP between now and 16 weeks, rabies as prescribed by law, other vaccines are subject to a discussion between you and your vet.

Cost : DHPP with physical exam at my vet was USD 62 in October 2012 (CAN dollar is roughly the same). It is my understanding that vet costs in larger cities may be higher.

My puppy is 13 weeks old and we won't be able to bring him to the vet for another 2 or 3 weeks, does that mean I need to get him vaccinated again at 20 weeks? I think I'm also gonna get 4 way leptospirosis

Following the Dodd Protocol is a good way to start. Long term immunity is not established until the one year booster is given.

Vaccinations like lyme, bordatella, lepto are "when, if" but you have to decide that. Lepto has a very high rate of reaction and most dogs don't need it. In a cooler climate I highly doubt lepto is a problem. Even if there are cases of Lepto in you area doesn't mean there is a high risk. Lyme is useless and bordatella is usually required when you board.

I haven't vaccinated for other than rabies after the one year booster.

what about timing, do i need to vaccinate him again at 20 weeks, since i cant get him to vet until 15 or 16 weeks old?

Mothers immunity is lost at the latest 16 weeks. At 20 weeks do one more Distemper/Parvo and a rabies a couple weeks later. Then re booster that again a year later then no more vaccines other then a rabies 3 year. I dont even do rabies but thats just me. I pay $100 for booster and a rabies (had my kitten done a number of months ago). Many vets want $150 for all that.

I dont do Lepto or lyme or bordetella...

Im an hour and a half south SE from you

So I do one both at 16 and 20?

You can do one Distemper/Parvo at 16 weeks, then a couple weeks later do a 3 year rabies vaccine. Then rebooster a year later then your good to go. You can do the full booster Distemper/Parvo/parainfluenza/Hepatitis/lepto but the Distemper/parvo are the two most important ones.

Mine have not received a Distemper parvo shot in years and are fine. I do not vaccinate for rabies anymore either (my one cant have it because hes allergic to it and the other is older)

I am sure your vet will tell you a different tale but I generally take what advice/suggestions I like and disregard the rest.
