Dakotas ears are driving me and him crazy!!! He litteraly will get a yeast infection in his ears every other month. Whats good preventative maintanince for this?
The Healthy Ear Recipe. I use this with my dog who has the same problem and her ears are BEAUTIFUL now. It works, it's easy, it feels like a major miracle sometimes LOL
Equal parts Monistat, Cortaide and Polysporin. One tube each, mix it all together and put in an air tight container.
If the ears are inflamed, put a small amount in twice a day. After the ears are clear again, use maybe once a week. I just put a small amount on the tip of my finger and massage it down into the ears.
One of the best things about this formula is it's dog friendly! Daisy hates anything put in her ears but she doesn't mind this stuff at all. She doesn't run, she doesn't shake her head a lot.
This is a great concoction by Arcane. If I remember right, her physician came up with it for her dogs after NOTHING else would work. We've used it on Penny with great success too.
Routine ear cleaning with an appropriate product that balances the ph is what you need for prevention. DermaPet's ear cleaners are the top natural ones available (their hygienic products are the best of the best). They have a couple different ear products. The creator of DermaPet products is a world-leading veterinary dermatologist. Here is the company's website (NOT mine & there is no link to my website from the company's): http://www.dermapet.com/
BUT, you & your vet need to determine what is causing the frequent ear infections to see if it's potentially related to an inhalant, food allergy, etc. If you don't get to the root cause, you will just keep band-aiding an underlying problem
Our vet recommended using white vinegar and warm water 50/50 to wipe out the ears. I also buy an ear cleaning solution called Epi-Otic which works very well. Using these products at least once every 2 weeks has helped us prevent ear infections and yeast.
Once or twice a week, sprinkle a capsule of probiotics (you get them from the health food store or where vitamins are sold, they need to be kept in the fridge) in each ear.
I have to be very careful with Daisy because she got a ear hematoma from an infection she had a couple of years ago. I need to minimize the head shaking as much as possible. The hematoma could flare up again if we're not careful. That's what I like most about the healthy ear recipe, it's not uncomfortable for her. And it works.
Have you had Dakota's thyroid levels checked? Frequent ear infections are a symptom of hypothyroidism. If low, treating the ear infections will not prevent them from recurring. Treating the low thyroid will.
Thanks so much for all the Replys! You know come to think of it my Vet wanted to check his Thyroid a while back for some skin dicoloration or something of that nature...I bet you that thyroid has something to do with it...
Have a full panel run, and remember that what is low normal for "canine parameter" is very low for Goldens. If there is a question, have Dr. Jean Dodds read the results. She's terrific.
A cleaner and moisture inhibitor is very, very, very useful for battling yeast infections. Also make sure that excess hair in the ear is trimmed routinely - especially if ear canals are deep set. 1 drop a day per ear once the infection is gone and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I use T8 Keto Flush.... It is a antibacterial and Antifungal.
