Finally decided to stick with VPI and renew. Premium for the basic insurance with the cancer rider is just $23 month ($276 yr) with a $50 per incident/illness deductible.
Granted the little things I typically take Brooks to the vet for generally run less than $60, but IF he ever had a serious illness/injury it would pay to have had it.
For anyone considering health insurance, VPI is great except that it does not cover any congenital problems or hip displaysia.
I am a firm believer in pet insurance!! I have Petplan, which does not cover routine care but it does cover accident, illness, and hereditary conditions like hip dysplasia, as well as no lifetime per-incident $$ limits as many do (for instance if my dog had a chronic disease that needed costly care for several years, many insurance companies will cap it at a certain dollar amount and after that I'd be SOL) I am very happy with the coverage it provides and the piece of mind in case something does come up.
I like that they will also offer coverage for "alternative therapies" like hydrotherapy and accupressure. Also they do cover cancer treatment as well. For the plan I have chosen, it costs $28/month, but there are lower plans as well.
I have Embrace on my two. I should send in Tucker's bill for the hot spot. They won't cover Shadow, but they will Tucker. Tucker's never had one before so for him it's not pre-existing. If I let the insurance lapse it will be.
At one point I was thinking--geez, I've had this 3 years and have never really had to use it. but, I guess that's what it is, INSURANCE in case something catastrophic happens.
That is the main reason I have mine as well. I got it for Sam as a puppy in the event of Hip Dysplasia, but now that that doesn't seem to be an issue at all, it's mainly for the cancer coverage. And I really hope the money spent on this insurance coverage will be a big waste of money... I'd like to never have to use it.
I have PetPlan USA. Already had a claim for Harry when he ate the floor mats at daycare. They paid quickly and most of the bill was covered except my deductible.
Which coverage level do you have and what deductible did you choose?
