Luxating Patella/ Elbow scores

Hi,

my golden 18 months old, injured his back leg whilst running over large rocks on a beach run two months ago. It has popped out a couple of times since and our vet recommended surgery which he had yesterday.

There were no signs prior to the injury of any issues with the leg. We wanted to breed from Jaxson in due course, and were intending to get elbow scoring done. My question is whether the injury to his leg will 'throw' the results of the test? Clearly if there were issues with the results for a genuine risk then I wouldn't breed him, but will we be able to tell? His hip results have come back as a 3:3 which I understand to be good.

Can anyone help or offer any advice please?

Thanks

Elbows are on the front legs. If bearing weight off norm for a few months would make an elbow dysplastic, I would imagine it would have been dysplastic in any case. Sorry for your boy's injury and hate that it caused a surgery...

Oh, I assumed that elbow's were the joints in all four legs!

I am sorry, I don't understand the rest of your comment?

He is tottering around tonight, feeling a bit sorry for himself but the vet is confident he will make a full recovery. He is a bit sleepy but otherwise happy in himself- I am sure it won't be long before he is up and running (metaphorically!)

What I meant was that if carrying his weight off the normal for a few months would cause his elbows to be dysplastic, they probably were dysplastic to begin with. It is the front legs only on an elbow clearance. The rear leg 'knee' is the stifle. When the patella comes out- luxates- it is when the kneecap moves out of place. You don't say what bones/joints were injured but in any case, I doubt the elbow score will be as a result of the rear leg injury.

Whatever you do, do not let your boy get active to soon. My golden girl, KayCee had her right knee operated on for luxating patella at age 16 months and 14 months later, she had to have the other knee operated on. My vet said to many times the dog will think he/she is fine and want to run and play and ended up destroying the surgery. And I did bump into a guy whose lab was scheduled for a repet surgery. He had made the mistake of thinking that since his dog acted normal and wanted to run and rip around, he was okay to do so.

I kept KayCee inactive for the entire time until my vet gave approval to let her run and play with her litter mate brother. It is so hard to keep them inactive when they are so young, but must be done. Good luck.

Thanks for your message.

It has probably come at a good time as Jaxson is definitely feeling better (had a couple of bad days and a further trip to the vet for more pain relief) and is now happy to walk and wants to play fight with his little westie brother! I will be sure to try and keep him quiet, but as you say, easier said than done.

Glad I could be of some help. One thing about this forum, no matter what the problem, it seems at least one person has faced it and can tell of their experience. Or how they handled it.

When KayCee had her second knee operated on, she also had to have some ligament repair, tho not to badly damaged. But it did require repair to prevent more damage. Then she was in a splint for a while...She had ver sensitive skin and had bad razor burn and when the splint was removed, horrible tape burn. I use Aloe Vera gel on her and it healed up the rash/burn very quick.

I use to massage her back and legs several times a day and work her other 3 legs some. She loved that. This picture was taken right after we got her home. That red & green thing was an old table cloth and I used it as a sling to help her get around once I pulled her out on the blanket.
