It was 2 1/2 weeks ago that Sophie had the seizure and we had to see the vet subbing for ours because he was at a seminar. She was anemic and had "dry eyes" Was given a B12 injection and put on an antibiotic. A follow up was set for today with my vet.
Well. he had had gone over the blood work, etc from 2 1/2 weeks ago and wanted to do a urine test, so we left her there as she had gone just before we put her in the car to go see him. This was at 11:00 this morning, and it was 5:00 this afternoon before they were able to get a sample.
Well, she has a "ranging kidney infection." Her anemia is worse. He could find no masses and said he had even had her held up on her back legs to give him a "different angle" for feeling. Of course that is no guarantee there isn't a small one. She has to be losing blood somewhere, or a failure to make blood. He did get a poop sample and sent it off to have it checked for blood. He said it could be due to that raging kidney infection, tho no blood was in her urine, or it could be gastric. Have to wait on the report to come back on the poop.
Her hips and knees are so bad, she even drags her feet, or shuffles. I have her on Cosequin and that helped a little. He sais she is in pain with her joints and with her kidneys. He doesn't dispense meds casually, but did put her on 1/4 tabled a day of Meloxicam. And he is on Augmentin twice a day for 30 days. That is a powerful antibiotic. He started her on her Adequan injections. For a month she will get 2 a week, and then 1 a week and if all goes well, one every 2 weeks. He is hoping that once her kidney's clear up, her red count will rise. Or if the test comes back it is gastro, he will do an ultrasound. I also have special drops to put in her eyes once a day. I use them in the morning and then just use artificial tears in the afternoon.
Meanwhile he put her on diet dog food for renal failure as he feels that best with the severity the infection. She gobbled it all tonight, so maybe it will work out for. My old girl needs prayers. When we adopted her 1 1/2 years ago just after her 111th birthday, we knew her time with us would be short, but we truly want her around a lot longer. Never a sweeter dog. She has not acted sick at all, we had no idea she had that horrible kidney infection or eye trouble other than allergies.
My vet is a SAINT. His one tech was talking us til he could get in and go over stuff and she said "Rickey said what the Slaytons want, the Slayton's get." When he first came here and took over the old doc's hospital, I was one of his first clients with my Irish Setter and being new, he was building up his practice and I had time to talk to him. He still talks about my "old red man" who he had to put to sleep in '97 due to bone cancer. When he sapyed my golden girl Kaycee in 2000, I was right in the OR watching. I watched him spay a pointer one day when I was there waiting for one of my dogs to come around after dental. I was in the Or when he removed the MCT from Honey's leg. In 2003 when Hunter was in ICU back in the work area, I was allowed to visit him back there any time I wanted to, and I did 3 times a day. I could take him, carrying the IV bag. Rickey told them not to worry about the bill, Hunter was the most important thing. Of course the ProHeart6 ended up killing him anyway after a week. He reminded us again today we were not to even think about the bill, he knew we would pay it as we could, And when we needed more food, just come and get it. There are few vets like this young man--well, he is 53. We have owned as much as $2300 when Hunter was in there in ICu with all the tests, meds, transfusions, etc, and had credit as much as $200 when I paid extra. Yes, vets like him are few and far between.
