So about 5 days ago my dog snowy was diagnosed with active lyme. I immediately got her antibiotics but now she limps after we walk (about 3-4 miles which she never had trouble with before) and has trouble breathing when active. She still has less interest in tennis balls and has had diarrhea for the last two days. She is also still excessively panting.
I'd go to our vet but I just two horrible reviews about him that I didn't know before. He also misdiagnosed her lyme for indigestion.
Important note: snowy is about 20 lbs over weight. I am a college student and mom does not have time to walk her everyday (though she cares for her very much) like I do when I'm home for break. She also has a terrible metabolism.
I'm calling the pet hospital in the morning but I would really like some opinions from other golden owners.

What kind of antibiotics were you given? Doxycycline is the anti biotic of choice and, assuming the dosage was correct, you generally see an almost immediate improvement.

Antibiotics can cause diarrhea, which is why most vets will also recommend probiotics.

How was your Golden diagnosed with Lyme? Co-infections with other tbd's is also common.

My Chance has been Lyme positive for 10 years -since he was a puppy. Lyme can be managed successfully so don't despair. Doxycycline is generally the prescribed treatment when Lyme is active. I'm not sure what test your vet did to make this diagnosis. There is a test called the Quantitative C6 Antibody test that gives a number. This is what my vet does to keep Chance's Lyme in check. Chance does not typically show any symptoms (like the limp you mention) so he is tested 2x per year. We live in an area with lots of deer ticks so Lyme is all too common here - with humans as well.

See if you can find out what test your vet did and if it was the C6 antibody, what was the number. I agree that you might be better off seeking out another vet. Possibly a different diet would help your girl with her weight problem too. She could be limping because of her weight and doing a 3 mile walk when she is not used to it normally.

Just some thoughts ... see if you can get a recommendation for another vet from someone you trust. I hope you find someone great to help your girl. Having the right vet is so important. It's a partnership that will help you manage your girl's health going forward.
