This is kind of scaring me - does anyone know what it is?

Hi Everyone,

On Saturday we found what we thought was a hot spot on Sawyer (he never had one before so wasn't sure). He had a patch of bloody and oozy fur so I cleaned it up as best I could and put some gold bond on it to try and dry it out. It was still oozing today so I thought I would investigate a bit more so I cleaned it really well and was able to get all the gunk out of his fur and I was shocked to find this gaping hole in his skin!

Now because of the blizzard, the vet was closed yesterday and doesn't reopen until tomorrow. I'm obviously a little freaked out that Sawyer has an open hole in his back. Does anyone know what this is or have any advice?? He is tender to the touch but still has good appetite, doesn't seem to really be bothering it at all and is pretty much acting like himself, but inside I am still freaking out a bit.

wow! I've never seen anything like that. Where is it located?

It is pretty much in the middle of his back. You can see right down into it.

Hopefully someone will see this and have an idea what it could be but I've never seen that. I would be at the Vet's office asap. Keep us posted the poor guy.

Yes I will be calling the vet first thing in the morning. I just hope someone on here might be able to tell me something for the time being. Everyone on here is usually so helpful and knowledgeable.

Yeah, its definitely tender if I touch around it but Sawyer's pretty much just acting like himself. He was trying to lick at it earlier so I put a T-shirt on him for now and he seems to be leaving it alone.

It really doesn't look like a hot spot. Keep it clean and keep him away from it, and see the vet as soon as it's safe to travel.
