Hi all, I'm reaching out here in the hopes that these symptoms will sound familiar to someone here, we are at a loss, and really concerned for our puppy.
We brought Dug home on Dec 23rd, he's just over ten weeks old now. We got him from a very reputable breeder and he was given a full bill of health by her vet, and by ours. Then, something very odd happened:
Dec 2nd: Noticed in the evening that he was quite wet on the sides of his mouth after a nap, thought he had just been drooling in his sleep, so we were not worried.
Dec 3rd: Noticed that there was increased wetness, but it seemed to be only after naps. Had a little diarrhea that evening. Not very interested in his food, but ate carrots and training treats just fine.
Dec 4th: Very wet all day, seemed quite lethargic, ate only about 1/4 cup of kibble, but ate petite carrots and little training treats just fine (maybe he doesn't likes the food that much, we're giving him Blue Buffalo, he's never seemed that enthusiastic about it). I noticed increased urination in him, he had a diarrhea accident twice inside the house, right after I had brought him inside.
Dec 5th: Took him to the vet. Vet put his fingers down Dug's throat to check for any obstruction, Dug wreched and two kibbles of food came up, along with a very small piece of pecan shell. He seemed to think that the pecan shell was stuck on the esophagus and described it like when a human has a piece of popcorn shell stuck on the esophagus and keeps swallowing, he said the pecan shell would have caused a similar reaction in Dug, but he wouldn't know to swallow all the time, so instead he would hypersalivate. The vet asked to run a couple of x-rays just to be sure and we agreed. The two x-rays came up clear. He gave Dug a three in one shot.....an antibiotic, an anti inflammatory, and medicine to stop him salivating so much (AStropine, Benzapen & Vetalog). He sent us home with Amoxi drops and Diphenoxylate/with Atropine to dry him up a bit. I told the vet about the increased urination and he said it would be because Dug is losing fluid from salivating more, so he would be drinking more, but we don't think he has been drinking more. He had two accidents in the house, one on his bed......he's been excellent about going outside and had only had a couple of accidents since we brought him home, so this was very unusual to us. To be honest, neither of us were thrilled with the outcome from the vet, especially when he was still salivating all evening, nothing changed. Again, ate very little kibble. Seemed lethargic off and on, with bursts of energy in between.
Today (Dec 6th): Still has increased urination, done some research and it seems that giving Azos cranberry pills to dogs is okay, so we gave him 300mg since he's just over 15lbs. We have given him amoxi drops and twice today. He's still hypersalivating. Now we just noticed a red mark under his chin, my boyfriend asked if I think it's a spider bite, but I'm unsure, could just be redness from it being wet and him scratching at it, which I have seen him doing a lot. Eaten a very small amount again, just carrots and treats to sneak pills in. Seemed much more energetic overall today. None of the medicine seems to be working.
I'm going to call the vet again tomorrow, possibly take him to another vet for a second opinion. We watch Dug like a hawk, we keep our home extremely neat, with nothing on the floor, we don't have kids, we're sure he's not eaten anything inside our home, or outside.....other than maybe chewing on a few pecan shells, I'm sure he's managed to swallow a few little pieces- there is a massive pecan tree outside our front door. After he pee
s now, he cleans sits down outside and cleans himself each time for a while.
On the 2nd, when all of this started, I did give him a pig ear to chew on for ten minutes, then again for ten minutes the next day, after that I threw it in the trash since it was smelly and soggy. Today we went to the pet store to ask who the supplier of the pigs ears that they sell are, they told us that they are Jones All Natural smoked pig ears, there was a recall of them last year.......not sure if this would have anything to do with his illness???
Sorry for such a long post. Thanks for reading!
Please, please.....if any of this sounds familiar, please let us know, we are so worried for our little guy!
