Hello, I am a new member to this forum and I apologize if this topic has been brought up before. I also want to apologize for the length of this post.
I just recently got two Golden Retriever puppies, brother and sister from the same litter. They are about 16 weeks old now. When I first brought them home I started them out on Diamonds Large Breed Puppy dry food (this is what the breeder had started them on). Both puppies had diarrhea and each vomited for one day. They went to the vet the very next available day. The Vet gave them shots and dewormed, and I believe a liquid antibiotic. Everything improved.
After about a month I started to do some research and found out that Diamond was not considered a good quality food based on dogfoodadvisor.com. I have since started them on Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy (One of our Vets recommended we try this). The one puppy (boy) has done well with the transition, the girl has not, and she has had loose bowels from the start ranging from all out diarrhea squirts to pudding consistency. On one of their normal visit to the vet for their shots we mentioned the problem. The vet (not the same vet as the first visit) said the issue was the high quality dog food and that it was too rich for her system. He said that he was not a vet nutritionist and feeds his dogs Samís club food, I immediately would not take any advice from him after hearing that. I did more research and decided to switch them to Wellness Super5mix for puppies. We are still in the process of switching them and are doing so gradually. The female went from a loose stool to diarrhea all night long. I got her into the vet again and they examined her stool, not worms, everything else looked normal during the examination. They sent me home with a can of Hill's Prescription Diet I/D Gastrointestinal Health Canned Dog Food and told me to give that to her for one day along with a dewormer again, Drontal Plus 22.7mg, Metronidazole 500mg(antibiotic) and Fortaflora. The first day that she ate the Hills can food her stool was firm, the next day we put her back on the dry food (3/4 Blue Buffalo - 1/4 Wellness) and she is back to loose stool like pudding.
Her energy is great as usual and she is growing like a weed. I did forget to mention that they were tested the first time for giardia and it was negative. I am completely at a lost where to turn to this time. I have spoken with several people at Petsmart and listened to their advice and expertise on the brands, I have done research several brands and would prefer to keep them on a high quality brand like Wellness, Blue Buffalo, etc.. The Vet (we have 4 vets in the same office) keeps recommending Science Diet which they sell out their office and I am sure they get a kickback for pushing that brand.
If anyone has had a similar problem and/or knows a treatment please share. I am simply going nuts trying to help this little girl get her bowels to normal.
