| I hope Tanner can recover soon! I completely agree with your post, Lyme disease is a terrible thing to see our pets go through and even though the vaccine isn't 100% (no vaccine is 100%) I am all for it. Beamer is vaccinated against it as are our labs after our first golden getting Lyme disease, too. With owners looking over the dogs everyday for ticks and tick prevention, you can almost have 100% coverage against the disease.

| Oh, I am sorry to hear about Tanner. I wish him a speedy and full recovery. My three boys get the Lyme vaccine yearly. My Golden tested positive for Ehrlichia recently and was on Doxycycline for three weeks. Just yesterday, I took my almost three year old Dachshund to the vet for yearly vaccinations, heartworm test etc. He also tested positive for Ehrlichia and is on three weeks of Doxycycline. My vet said, that tick borne diseases are on the rise. He sees cases of Ehrlichia almost weekly, has seen cases of Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. He also said, dogs that spend a great deal of time outside should get vaccinated against Lyme disease. My dogs are indoor dogs, but I have a big fenced in yard, where the boys can go to whenever they want and I walk them about 5-6 times a day. I live in the country. The vet also said cases of West Nile in dogs are on the rise, but there is no vaccine that I am aware of yet. This is a mosquito born disease. Good luck with Tanner, I hope he feels better soon!

| Tanner has Lyme disease Just an update on his condition... Went to the vet this past Friday for a 1 week checkup since he was released from the hospital and he has made some slight progress. He still has about 90 percent rear end paralysis but the vet is very pleased that he can stand on his own for a few seconds if you place his paws correctly on the ground. He still gets the tremors in his legs and his toes curl under when you place him standing up till you fix them but she said this was something he couldn't do a week ago. He has a very good appetite and just started the other day dragging himself to the door to go out and pee, this is wonderful news...he is getting some control over his bladder!!! The vet changed him to 1 dose of doxy a day for the next 2 weeks. He does show some interest in the birds outside and will play and talk with me and my husband, but he is spending alot of time sleeping. We are doing exercises to keep his muscles in shape at least 4 times a day, bicycle motions and bounces to get him used to standing in an upright position with his rear legs, lots of massages and I am playing with the insides of his paws to get him used to feeling them. This is going to be a long recovery but we are deeply committed to having our boy up and walking, The vet said this could take a few months and progress could be slow but it will all be worth it in the end, He was diagonised with Lyme disease and tick paralysis. I have talked to a few dog owners and read so much on the internet and I am worried about his future health. Can the dog suffer more episodes of paralysis in the future or have a relapse in 1 or 2 years? Thanks Paula |
