Hi everyone,

I was wondering what people used for heartworm, flea and tick prevention. Currently Pedro is on Trifexis and it doesn't prevent ticks. The vet told us ticks aren't common in FL so told us to get Trifexis(which works really well for fleas!). Yesterday and the day before after his walk I found 1 on him... Not biting him but on top of his coat. I quickly got rid of them but really want a good preventative in case they start biting.

I myself have read way to many horrible things about Trifexix to even trust trying it with mine.

However, I have had excellent results with Revolution for both dogs and my cats. I will be switching the one dog to Advantage multi next year as I feel he is allergic to the ingredient in Revolution. So I want to rule it out. If thats not the issue, I will in a heart beat go back to Revolution

My dogs do get heartguard. However I would never put spot on treatments on my dogs. No wonder they all get cancer and die. I use only natural treatments for fleas and ticks. It works and one flea or tick isn't the end of the world. I want to hug my dog and not breath that stuff. Nor do I want my kids or grandchildren to come in contact with it.

Just wondering what you have heard about trifexis?

Also do you buy online or at the vet? The vet says if you buy on petmeds or any discount place online it's counterfeit and illegal??? I really think he just wants people to spend money at his office though..

Nope your vet is right. ALthough, I know that is how Merial operates. If your dog were to get heartworms and you bought the HW prevention from the vet, Merial will pay for the treatment.

If you buy it from an online distributer, they will not. I have seen this way too many times. So your vet is not off by saying that.

Also, are these pills or ointment which you apply on their back? I guess I haven't done my research... But I guessing the pill wouldn't be as safe.

Also, Revolution is great for some people, but I would not recommend it for people living in the south. It is not the best HW prevention. My vet has not sold Revolution in years because of the dogs coming back HW positive on it.

I use heartgard and I switch from frontline and Advantage in the summer months. I also keep my yard treated every 3 weeks. Fleas are ridiculous down here!!

If it is really bad, I will use comfortis ( but that is always a last resort).

I just stared use DE. It is all natural and can be used for soooo many things! Many breeders were using it, so I decided to give it a try. Here is a good website too look at. (Food/Human grade only)

Revolution, Advantage, Frontline, and Advantage Multi are all topicals.

I have known alot of people use Trifexis with no problems. The only thing about Ticks...is I honestly think nothing works wonders with them. My vet tries to convince me on the Preventic collars works great for ticks. I have yet to try them.

I agree with kfayard about the revolution- not so much a good heartworm prevention with areas with a lot of it. Also, it only kills the dog tick, so it really isn't a good product for ticks.
If you want protection against ticks you really only have topical options. Frontline, K9 Advantix, Vectra... try one of those products.
