Could you guys explain to me the methods used? I like to think it is a lighter sedation method vs full blown sedation for surgery.

Could it be as simple as giving a dog a anti anxiety drug orally beforehand to take the edge off?

My friends are starting to have reoccurring lameness problems with their old boy and are very apprehensive about the sedation. I wonder about down the road for Fiona too. She won't just lay on the table motionless like Deardra and Tucker did for their x-rays.

I think it depends on the dog and what type of x-ray. We just had our old girl (15) in for kidney/bladder x-rays. She was there all day and when we went at 5:30pm to pick her up they were just finishing. She came out to us at 6:00 and you wouldn't know they didn't do it first thing in the morning. Don't think they gave her much of anything.

I've actually never have had any of our dogs sedated for xrays - even Danny who had ten million done in his first years.

For abdomen and chest rads, you generally do not need sedation unless the dog is a total pill. Limbs are a little more tricky because many dogs do not just lay there and it involves one or two people holding the dog which contributes to their radiation exposure. There are drugs like dexdomitor which give sedation. And it is reversible.

Ky recently had x-rays on her back. They sedated her and when she came home she had reverted back to the sad, scared, dog we brought home 4+ yrs ago. She didn't eat for 3 days and she wouldn't even allow DH (her best bud) to sit on the floor next to her, at one point she even raised a lip.
I talked to the vet about it and he said if she ever needs to be sedated again he would use something different so he can immediately give her a shot to wake her up when they're done instead of letting it wear off like last time.
After watching what she went through for me to ever allow it again would have to be something immediately life threatening.

There is a type that I think starts with an "i" that doesn't go into the tissues of organs, etc. We give it to our old Golden who started out with seizures years ago.

When mine had his hip xrays I asked they used dexdomitor. As for the one with an "I", Isoflorane. Its commonly used for high risk dogs and smaller dogs but we use it for everyone. Isoflorane is an inhalant which they wake up faster from though I have seen some struggle waking up from this though not very often.

My Golden was sedated a few times for hip x-rays and when he tore his cruciate ligament. The first time, they added something with Morphine combined and it took him three days to get over the effects and eating again. Next time, I requested another type of sedation that could be easily reversed and it was much better.
The last bunch of x-rays I had done for unexplained limping this past summer and early fall, I convinced the vet to take them without sedation and it worked out just fine.
