Our dog is ~10 years old, but we've had her for less than two years. While out for a walk this evening, my kids were walking her through an area near a pond with long grass, and she suddenly turned her head, and when she turned back around, she had a duck in her mouth. She had killed it instantly :frown2:. She has not done anything like this before, though we have always been very careful not to ever let her near our Guinea pigs, as given the chance, she obsesses over them like she would like to get them.
I'm worried now about her doing that to one of our cats, or to a small dog. She is reactive to other dogs, which we have been working with (using Feisty Fido techniques), and she's doing decently with that, but small dogs are what she tends to react to most, and now I feel concerned that she isn't necessarily all bark and no bite, kwim? She's otherwise an extremely sweet, calm, easy dog. She doesn't have a particularly soft mouth, though. She's not mouthy at all, I only mean when she's taking a treat from us, she doesn't have that really gentle way of doing it that some dogs do. With the duck tonight, obviously she didn't have a soft mouth, either. Should we be concerned, or is it likely this is a one-off thing? We're about to take her to the beach for a few days, and she's certainly likely to encounter other animals there. Other dogs, for sure, seagulls, and usually there are inevitably a couple dead birds on the beach. I just don't want her to decide this is a new thing she does!!
