I was under the impression that this was a skill that was sort of learned and took a little practice?
I took Casey out to pee to day, and he went over to his normal spot where there happens to be a big ol' post sticking out of the ground. He lifts his leg, does his thing, and continues on. Now i thought that a dog would do this after watching another dog do it. Casey has maaaybe seen one dog do it at the dog park we took him to. (one time, a long time ago!) I've also heard that the first time they try, they'll fall, or be all wobbly...not the case with Casey!

Has anybody else's dog done this with out an example and done it right on the first try?

here i was all proud that Casey had never learned that slightly gross trick...*sigh* no more bragging for me!

Too funny! I think they figure this one out on their own. My dog started young, and he was pretty wobbly at first. Now he lifts so high he about falls over. When he's on leash, he lifts even higher and uses the leash on his neck for balance. He's ridiculous.

that is pretty hilarious! Casey is still pretty moderate on the height of the leg...i've seen some dogs fall over because they try to lift too high! silly doggies!

Many years ago we had a mix Irish setter and golden retriever female (Molly).

At that time there were two male neighbor dogs that would come over to play most of the day. Of course over the day the male dogs would lift their legs to go and I noticed Molly taking note.

One day I looked out and saw Molly trying to lift her leg to pee. First the left leg then the right. Finally, she decided to squat with her front paw raised.

Lincoln taught himself 1 year after he was neutered (despite my vet telling me a dog neutered before he starts will never hike his leg)...Guess my OLD vet was wrong

Ruby he lifts her leg a bit when she pees. She did this since she was 6 months old also after she was fixed
