| My dogs are...um...very close I just want reassurance this is normal because it weirds me out! Hiro, my Border Collie mix, and Buddy are very close to one another - ever since we first got Buddy, Hiro has cleaned his ears and eyes and basically mothered Buddy. Now that Buddy's older their relationship seems to have progressed to...well... They started cleaning each other's genitals a few months ago (which I at first thought was just sniffing and wasn't too concerned about). Now it's progressed to an almost embarrassing level for Buddy at least - when we take them out to eliminate, if he finishes before Hiro he'll go and start cleaning Hiro while he's still squatting. He doesn't listen to commands when he's doing this either - the only way to get him to stop is if Hiro moves or if we move him. I've caught him doing this same thing when we're out for walks too. Buddy's neuter is in a couple weeks and I'm hoping that will help with this fixation, but is it even something I should worry about? I've never owned male dogs before, so I'm not sure if it's a normal occurence.

| You may be on the money with the urine thought, Lilliam. I've suspected that Hiro had a UTI for a couple months (he's taking a little longer to go and I've noticed it's not always a stream), but the vet told me not to worry because he checked out on a physical exam. I guess that once again my dog is smarter than me ![]() I'll take a sample in and get him checked!

![]() Also, other conditions may present as sweet or smelly urine. An example would be canine diabetes mellitus. Probably not in this case because the symptoms you would have noticed, such as increased thirst and urination. But it's just one examplel. Easily determined and remedied. |

| I'd be concerned if this is some kind of OCD behavior... and I'd definitely discourage a goodly portion of that. It's normal for intact dogs to check each other out - that part I don't care about. The dogs will check each other out, clean up a little bit, and move on. When they are licking ears, eyes, or constantly licking the other dog's rear and whatnot - that's rude OCD behavior. |
