My good friend is a veterinarian with lots of dog stories, some funny and others not so good.
He's had on many occasions had to remove tennis balls from the throat of larger dogs. He suggested not leaving tennis balls around so a larger dog and play with them unsupervised, or get a larger size tennis type ball. Another toy to be aware of is cheap squeaky type toys that are filled with stuffing. Most dogs, Mine included eventually rip these toys apart and pull out the stuffing. If a dog eats the stuffing, this could be a bad thing.
The bottom line is use good judgment with dog toys.
