Thinking Game!

My mom is a trainer and showed me how to get my goldens to use their brain.
I got a handful of treats in one hand and put a bell in front of and to the left of me (can be any toy). I just sat quietly and waited. If the dog didn't do anything I touched the toy and as soon as they looked at it I gave them a cookie. If they look at it again, they get another cookie. Pretty soon they figure out to look at the toy and get rewarded. After a couple times they have to get closer to it to get rewarded, then touch it, then move it. When they don't get rewarded after looking at it, they think, gee, didn't she see me look at it? Then they really look at it or touch it with their nose! I couldn't believe how fast the puppy was and the older dog would push that toy all over the room for a cookie! I even got my 15 year old golden to do it too and I thought she was over being trained! It was fun!! Has anyone tried this type of training?

No but it sounds like fun! Liberty loves games so maybe we'll try it. Her favourite is hide and go seek. One of us will take a handful of treats and go hide while someone holds her. Then we release her and she has to use her nose to find the person hiding with the treats. She LOVES this game!

We actually used this a lot in beginning agility. I switched trainers and she doesn't use this method but Abby didn't wait for instructions when we went up to an obstical, she tried all kinds of things. I love how it improved her drive and curiosity!
