Catch-22?

I have been following this site since we decided we are ready for a puppy to join our family (me, hubby, 3 boys ages 12, 9, and 6), but only recently joined. However, I keep running into the same problem: breeders I can find who have puppies already or a litter on the way, those pups are usually already spoken for, but if there is no litter on the way, there seems to be no way to find the breeder (e.g. NORCAL Golden Retriever Club has a puppy referral page, but not a list of breeders without puppies). I know that there are many good breeders out there without websites, but how do I find them? Even if there is a website, if there has not been a breeding how would I know the pedigree and clearances to know if I would want to be on a waiting list?
Any help, including referrals in the Northern CA area (or beyond if there is personal knowledge), would be greatly appreciated!

A lot of times a good breeder would have puppies already spoken for even BEFORE they breed the pups. You can check out the dam on their website and check their clearances that way, and any history litters. Chances are if their dam's have all clearances then it's a good breeder and they will not breed their dog's for less-than complete clearances?

Did you contact the member in charge of breeder referral for the Norcal club? All reputable breeders are going to have a wait list and breeding plans well in advance of having a litter. Sometimes a year or more before puppies will be ready. If you contact the club, they should know whom will have pups available when. And if there's any new litters with more pups available than expected, they'll know that too.

Wanted to add, depending on where you're located, it may be easier to come up to Oregon than to Southern California. Pups there can go for $2,000 or more because it's so expensive to breed and compete in that area. Look at the Pacific Rim Golden Retriever Club breeder referral as well.

I did contact the breeder referral member, but they have only given me one name at a time, and only people who already have pups. I had hoped that it would be more like what you are suggesting, with referrals to breeders in general, so that I could talk to them about plans for breeding and consider getting on a wait list ahead of time.

We live in Northern California and started our search last fall. We were blessed to bring home our eight week old boy from one of the breeders that topped our list just this past Saturday. We are beyond thrilled and exhausted. It is like having an infant and a toddler at the same time, but we are so happy!

Coincidentally, we recently had an email from another breeder that was high on our list, that may have puppies soon. Robin Baker at Aubridge Goldens. I think they may even be in Sacramento.

As suggested, we contacted the NorCal GR Club repeatedly for recommendations, and never got a response. The Nor Cal search can be hard, bur worthwhile if you stick with it. There is a thread on this site that has a great list to use as a starting point. If these breeders don't have litters, they may be able to make recommendations.

Good luck!!

NORCAL GR Club responded with 2 names this time -- Nancy Webb (whose puppies are all spoken for, but we had a lovely chat) and Emily Pate (with whom I have been emailing and will be talking to her tomorrow). As I was typing this she sent me the parents' pedigrees (I haven't even looked yet) so am including here. She says Doc has current eye clearance from earlier this year that is not listed yet, but I would get a copy in puppy packet.
Does anyone know Emily or her dogs? Thoughts on the pedigrees?

Doc

Pedigree: BISS CH Masters Teko Best Of The West

Blush

Pedigree: Forever Goodfield's Pillow Talk

Thanks for any help!

Well, we have placed a deposit for a male pup from the litter of Doc and Blush I mentioned above. We should be bringing him home at the very end of this month/beginning of next. The whole family is very excited and I have been on a crazed buying spree on Amazon for crate, playpen, toys, collar, etc. I'm now trying to find a good trainer for puppy classes. So much to do!
