Hello all,

I have been digging through the forums for the past few weeks in my search for the perfect breeder. I've looked at countless breeder websites and I am just having trouble finding what I want. So, I am enlisting the help of you fine people here on these forums :)

I'm looking for a breeder that either has puppies that are ready to go now or within the next month (by the end of Feb, or early March). Of course, a breeder that has all the health clearances. Health and temperament are my top priorities! Also, a breeder that will be there for any questions post sale, for the life of the puppy. Not that I'd be any sort of bother, but it's nice to have an assurance that the breeder will always be there for anything.

I'm located in Charlotte, NC - so any of the surrounding states would be optimal. However, I am not opposed to a longer distance breeder. Ideally, though the SC, NC, VA, or TN areas.

If you could please provide personal recommendations instead of just listing websites, that would be much appreciated. I want to hear from people that have actual experience with breeders in this area (or other areas, for longer distance breeders).

Thanks so much!

Hey there! Welcome to the forum! Since you've been on the forum researching I'm going to assume you've read through all the "puppy buyer" checklists and have educated yourself about the recommended health clearances. I live just south of Charlotte and unfortunately, we don't have tons of extremely good breeders right here which I'm sure you've figured out.

What are you planning to do with your dog? Anything in particular like therapy work or obedience or tracking? Or mostly family dog to go hiking with? If you can be clear with a breeder about what your needs are for the dog's personality and energy level it can be easier for the breeder to help you.

Have you contacted Sandlapper Golden Retriever Club or Atlanta GRC? Their puppy referral contacts ought to have some ideas for you.

Margie Sarkin / Goldruls Golden Retrievers is East of Atlanta and is someone you might want to email. She is very reputable and would be able to let you know of any litters she knows of from other good breeders if she doesn't have one planned, Goldruls

You may have trouble finding a lot of people with actual experience, we don't have seem to have as many regular members from the southeast. I'm going to Florida for my next puppy. There is a really nice litter planned for spring in Wisconsin if you don't mind flying (I've done it before and it's not too tough with a direct flight.) That is Four Lakes Golden Retrievers / Jane Noble. The sire of this litter is an amazing dog who is owned by a member of this forum. Four Lakes Golden Retrievers

Good Luck with your search!

I live just south of Charlotte as well. I see that there really aren't any reputable breeders in this area. I found a AKC Breeder of Merit, but upon searching their website, found they home their puppies at 6 weeks old. RED FLAG!!!

The problem with the parent clubs in any of the areas, really in the whole US, is that they either don't respond or the breeders listed don't have any puppies. It's a huge brick wall.

As mentioned, ideally I'd like a great breeder within driving distance of me (3-4hours of Charlotte). However, I really am not opposed to a fantastic breeder that is further away, I'd just need to make travel arrangements.

As for what I am looking for, I am an ABC & CPDT Certified Dog Trainer. I mostly do obedience (more good manners) with my clients. But, I would love to get my hands wet in the agility and possibly obedience competition. First and foremost, I am looking for a GR as a pet. I will not be showing for conformation or participating in any competition events in the foreseeable future. GR's really appeal to me for their versatility and friendliness most of all.

Have you checked out this thread? K9Design is a member who had a nice list for you to start checking. Right now is an extremely busy time for people who show, this may explain why you haven't heard back from some you've reached out to. Don't give up. The litter I mentioned in my first thread is planned for this spring. A nonstop flight roundtrip on a Sunday in June to Milwaukee is $350. Totally worth it for the right breeder. Don't limit yourself to the Carolinas. Email Jane, Email Margie Sarkin. K9Design is a highly respected member here and she would have some great ideas for you for a trainable litter of performance puppies and she is religious about clearances. Her name is Anney and her email address is part of her signature, if you contact her and tell her what you're interested in, she could help point you in the right direction. This is just going to take some effort and patience and it will totally be worth it.

Sunfire and Gaylans are also very well thought of performance breeders who are careful with clearances.

I re-read your original post, honestly most of the really good breeders will have their puppies all spoken for before they are even born. Occasionally someone will back out or maybe there would be a larger litter born than expected but for the most part you are not going to find the puppy of your dreams and have him be ready to go home in a few weeks. I have been waiting on a puppy from a particular litter for almost two years now. That may be a little extreme but it is certainly not unheard of. If you want a puppy soon, you will definitely have to travel.
